Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs topped the Toledo Mud Hens, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. Trea Turner and Brian Goodwin both tallied three hits, with Turner homering and Goodwin driving in four runs.
Syracuse (36-39) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning off Toledo starter Buck Farmer. Turner led off the inning with his fifth home run of the year estimated at 411 feet for a 1-0 Chiefs lead.
The Chiefs crossed the plate again in the third, again thanks to Turner. The shortstop doubled down the third-base line and scored on the play after Tyler Collins misplayed the ball in left field for an error. The oddly generated run gave Syracuse a 2-0 lead.
Toledo (32-43) answered back in the top of the fifth off Chiefs starter A.J. Cole. Jordany Valdespin led off with a line-drive triple to left field and scored in the ensuing at-bat on a groundout. Cole then struck out the following two batters, to end the frame with Syracuse leading 2-1.
Cole was stellar on the afternoon, allowing just one run over seven innings. The right-hander tied his season high with eight strikeouts and only walked one batter.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Chiefs tacked on another run. Caleb Ramsey led off with an opposite field single and moved to second on a Jose Lozada sacrifice bunt. After Turner grounded out, Steve Lombardozzi walked, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Brian Goodwin then hit a hard line drive off the glove of the second baseman Tyler Bortnick and into right field. The single brought home Ramsey to put the Chiefs up 3-1.
Syracuse blew the game open two innings later. Turner and Lombardozzi led off the seventh inning with back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second. Mud Hens Manager Lloyd McClendon then brought left-handed pitcher Blaine Hardy on in relief of Angel Nesbitt to face lefties Goodwin and Matt Skole. However, the two left-handed batters met Hardy with consecutive singles of their own, scoring both Turner and Lombardozzi for a 5-1 lead. Preston Guilmet then came on in relief of Hardy, and walked Pedro Severino to load the bases with no outs. After Matt den Dekker grounded into force out at home plate, Jason Martinson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Skole to give the Chiefs a 6-1 lead.
Goodwin capped off the Chiefs scoring in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Turner walked, and then Lombardozzi hit a groundball to short. Dixon Machado got the lead runner at second, but Bortnick's throw to first pulled Valdespin off the bag extending the inning. Goodwin capitalized in the next at-bat, hitting a long home run to right field to give the Chiefs the final 8-1 advantage.
Syracuse returns to action Monday night for the first of a three-game set against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Taylor Hill is scheduled to pitch for the Chiefs opposite of Chad Green for the RailRiders. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
