GARY, Ind. - Thanks to a three-hit, complete game shutout of the reigning league-champion Shreveport-Bossier Captains, Gary SouthShore RailCats starter Scott Shaw was named American Association Pitcher of the Week by Pointstreak.com for the week ending July 17, it was announced today.
Shaw, 24, posted a career best and RailCats season-high 11 strikeouts in a 9-0 drubbing of the Captains on Saturday, July 16. The right-hander allowed just three batters to reach second base, and uncorked 127 pitches in the victory, walking just one and allowing only three hits. The Gurnee, Ill. native tossed the first complete game shutout for the RailCats since Willie Glen blanked Fargo-Moorhead in North Dakota on June 26, 2010. The RailCats Opening Day starter, Shaw leads the 'Cats in strikeouts (54) and wins with a 7-3 record and is third in the American Association in games started (14) and eighth in innings pitched (85.2).
With the award, Shaw becomes the third consecutive RailCats player to be honored with an American Association weekly prize. Infielder Brad Boyer took home Batter of the Week honors for the week ending July 10 after batting .500 (12 for 24) in five games including seven extra-base hits, while outfielder Cristian Guerrero collected the hitting accolade for the week ending July 3 after earning a .478 (11 for 23) average, adding four homers and 16 RBI over a six game span.
Shaw spent the last three seasons in the New York Mets organization where the righty advanced as high as Double-A Binghamton. In 70 career minor league appearances including 54 starts prior to the 2011 season, Shaw boasted an 18-18 record and a 4.68 ERA over 309 innings. The Warren High School product also struck out 254 batters while walking 117 over his professional career through 2010.
Originally selected in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Mets, Shaw played collegiately for the University of Illinois. In three seasons as a member of the Fighting Illini Baseball Team, Shaw posted a 6.78 ERA in 152.7 innings and earned an 11-11 career record over 29 starts and 35 appearances while racking up 109 career strikeouts.
