Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La.---The Captains were handed a season-high sixth straight defeat as Wichita scored three times in both the seventh and eighth innings to beat Shreveport-Bossier 8-4 at Fair Grounds Field Monday night.

Wingnuts starter Junior Guerra (5-2) was on the mound for the first time since throwing 7.1 hitless innings against the Captains at Lawrence Dumont Stadium on July 13 as part of a combined no-hitter. He was hittable this time, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out six and walking two in six innings.

Captains starter Josh Strawn was also solid in his professional debut. The righthander from Southern Polytechnic State University threw six innings, allowing just two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four. Strawn allowed an RBI single to Wingnuts catcher Edwin Bellorin in the second and a one-run double to third baseman Juan Richardson in the third but held Wichita scoreless over his last three innings. He got help from the Captains defense, which turned three double plays in the ball game.

Robert Perry's RBI single in the third got the Captains on the board. They would tie the game in the fifth on Alex Cowart's RBI double. Cowart, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored, was the only Captain with multiple hits on the night. In the sixth Uriak Marquez scored Palmer Karr Jr. on a sacrifice fly to give the Captains the lead, though Shreveport-Bossier would leave runners on the corners when Joe Urtuzuastegui hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

In the seventh, Jake McCarter (3-1), walked Wingnuts left fielder Mike Conroy and then gave up a single to shortstop Josh Horn, which scored Conroy and tied the game. Wichita would take the lead for good when Horn and center fielder Brent Clevlen scored on Richardson's RBI double off Lee Henry.

In the eighth, the Wingnuts pulled away. Henry walked two and gave up two singles to start the inning. A bases loaded walk to Conroy made it 6-4. Then Horn and Clevlen each hit sacrifice flies to give Wichita the 8-4 lead. Shreveport-Bossier managed just one hit in the last two innings of Wichita relievers Marcos Tabata and Josh Dew.

Richardson continued to hit Captains pitching well, going 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs. Right fielder Peter Barros went 3-for-4 with a run and Horn added a pair of RBIs.

With the loss, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 28-34, six games below .500 for the first time on the season. The Captains are nine games out of the Wild Card and 13.5 out of the American Association South Division. Righthander Steve Kent (0-0, 0.00) makes his Captains debut tomorrow against Wichita's Nick Singleton on Captain Morgan Twofer Tuesday with two-for-one admission and a two-for-one deal on any Captain Morgan or Maker's Mark drink
