Wingnuts Grind Out Comeback in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, LA- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 8-4 at Fair Grounds Field on Monday night.

Wichita overcame a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mike Conroy drew a one-out walk and stole second base. Josh Horn singled up the middle to score Conroy with the tying run. After Brent Clevlen walked, Juan Richardson crushed a double to deep left field that drove in two more runs to give Wichita a 5-3 lead.

Shreveport-Bossier scratched out a run in the bottom of the seventh on Bryan Sabatella's two-out, RBI single off of Jared Simon. Sabatella then stole second base and took third on a throwing error charged to Edwin Bellorin. After Palmer Karr Jr. walked, Simon retired Andres Rodriguez on a line drive to right, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Wichita added three more runs in the top of the eighth to extend the lead. A single from Peter Barrows, a walk to Edwin Bellorin, and a bunt single from Jose Duran loaded the bases with no outs. Conroy forced home Wichita's sixth run with a bases loaded walk. Horn and Clevlen followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to make it 8-4.

Marcos Tabata threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning while Josh Dew had a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to finish the win.

RBI singles from Bellorin in the second, and Richardson in the third allowed the Wingnuts to take a 2-0 lead.

Robert Perry doubled home Shreveport-Bossier's first run in the bottom of the third. Alex Cowart tied the game with a double in the bottom of the fourth. Uriak Marquez hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to give the Captains their brief 3-2 lead.

Junior Guerra started and earned the win for the Wingnuts, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Guerra walked three and struck out six. Guerra is now 4-0 in his last five starts.

Josh Strawn started for the Captains and took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Captains' reliever Jake McCarter was charged with the loss. Barrows finished the game with three hits, a walk, and a stolen base. Conroy set a Wingnuts' single-game record with four walks.
