BEIJING - Grizzlies outfielder Nate Schierholtz hit a 6th-inning home run in the United States Olympic baseball team's tournament opener on Wednesday evening in Beijing, China. Korea scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally and defeat Team USA, 8-7 at Wukesong Field 2.

Schierholtz, a native of Danville, CA, started the game in center-field, batting fifth for the U.S. The top five hitters in United States lineup were all from the Pacific Coast League; John Gall (Albuquerque), Jayson Nix (Colorado Springs), Terry Tiffee (Las Vegas), Matt Brown (Salt Lake), and Schierholtz.

Leading off the 6th inning with Team USA down 6-3, Schierholtz homered to right-field off of Korean reliever Taehyon Chong, one of three US homers in the game. The home run continued a torrid six weeks of play for the Giants' top outfield prospect, who batted .436 in his last 13 games with the Grizzlies, and led Team USA in runs and RBI during exhibition play in North Carolina.

Team USA had fought back with three runs of its own in the top of the ninth inning to take a one-run, lead but the Koreans mounted their own comeback, capped by a sacrifice fly from Jongwook Lee to earn the victory.
