LAST NIGHT: Trailing 4-2 entering the 5th, the Isotopes erupted for 8 runs and went on to defeat the Royals 11-5. Andrew Beattie singled to lead off the 5th and came up later in the inning and capped the outburst with a 2-run homer. Michael Ryan also homered in the 5th off Brad Salmon, hitting a 3-run shot to right. Robert Andino doubled twice in the big inning, knocking in a run, and Dallas McPherson collected 2 of his 3 RBI in the 5th inning explosion. Rick VandenHurk (2-1) picked up the win, giving up 4 runs - only 1 earned - on 4 hits over 5.0 innings, while matching his season high with 9 strikeouts. Tyler Lumsden (3-11) took the loss, surrendering 7 runs - 6 earned - on 8 hits over 2.1 frames. Ryan Shealy had 2 run-scoring hits for Omaha, including his 18th home run of the season.
ROYALS REPORT: The 8-run 5th inning for Albuquerque last night marked the biggest inning for a Royals opponent since June 16, 2006 when the Memphis Redbirds scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 4th at AutoZone Park on their way to a 9-4 victory over Omaha. *** Making his 1st start last night since July 29 due to arm soreness, Dusty Hughes fired 2.0 hitless innings, walking 2 and fanning 5. *** Lumsden retired the 1st 5 batters he faced last night, running his scoreless streak to 8.1 innings since he came off the D.L. on July 30. However, by the time his appearance was over, Lumsden's ERA jumped from 6.72 to 7.14. *** Of Shealy's 18 home runs this year, 4 have come in 9 games against Albuquerque. 12 of his 51 RBI have come at the Isotopes' expense. *** Gookie Dawkins singled in his last at-bat in the 7th inning Tuesday night, extending his hitting streak to 9 games. His longest streak was a 10-gamer that ended on August 3 vs. Colorado Springs when he was 0-for-3. His current 9-game string began the next day. Over his last 25 contests, Dawkins is batting .318 (34-for-107) with 4 home runs and 11 RBI. *** Brayan Pena picked up his 5th stolen base last night, coming in his 6th attempt of the year in 44 games with Omaha. Pena's season high in steals in 6, set in 2006 with Richmond. He was also caught stealing 6 times that year. *** Kila Ka'aihue has hit in 13 of his 1st 14 Triple-A games with Omaha. Since his promotion from Northwest Arkansas, he's hitting .375 (18-for-48) with 7 home runs and 12 RBI. Ka'aihue fanned twice last night, giving him 5 strikeouts over his last 3 games. He had whiffed just 8 times in his 1st 11 tilts with the Royals. The former University of Nebraska recruit leads all full-season minor leaguers with a .465 on-base percentage and is tied for 2nd in slugging at .651. He ranks 2nd in the minors in walks (90) and 4th in home runs (33). *** Matt Tupman has hit in 4 straight games, going 5-for-14 (.357) while driving in 3 runs. Tupman, who batted .209 in the season's 1st half, is hitting .328 since the All-Star break, going 20-for-61 with 6 doubles and 10 RBI. *** Josh Labandeira was hitless in 4 at-bats last night, halting his 4-game hitting streak. During the string, he went 4-for-13 (.308) and had 3 RBI. *** Brett Bigler, called up from High Class-A Wilmington yesterday, started in right field for the injury-depleted Royals. He struck out in his 1st 3 at-bats before lining out to right field in his last trip to the plate to end the game. Bigler hit .197 with no homers and 10 RBI in 54 games with the Blue Rocks. *** Omaha has lost 16 of its last 21 and 33 of its last 46 games overall. The Royals have also dropped 23 of their last 32 home contests.
STARTERS: RH Dallas Trahern (4-10, 6.52) vs. RH Carlos Rosa (4-3, 4.25)
Rosa makes his 11th start with Omaha, his 2nd since missing a few weeks of action with a sore elbow. The 23-year old right-hander's last outing was at Nashville last Saturday. In his 1st start since July 13, he took the loss in the Royals' 5-3 defeat in game 1 of a doubleheader (1.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R-3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K). Rosa was promoted to KC in June and made his 1st 2 Major League appearances, both in relief, going 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA. His 1st start for Omaha was May 17 at Albuquerque, when he took the loss in Omaha's 11-4 defeat (3.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 4 K). Rosa began this season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, going 4-2 in 8 starts and leading the Texas League with a 1.20 ERA. In 45.0 innings, he gave up just 30 hits and 7 walks, striking out 42 batters. Entering 2008, Rosa was ranked by Baseball America as the #7 prospect in the Royals' organization. In 2007, he opened the season with Class-A Wilmington and was 2-1 with a 0.39 ERA in 4 starts before being promoted to Double-A Wichita. He went 6-6 with a 4.36 ERA and 1 save in 21 games (17 starts) with the Wranglers. He struggled for Wichita early, but was 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA in 10 starts after the All-Star break, posting a 0.83 ERA in 4 August starts. After missing the entire 2005 season following Tommy John surgery, Rosa bounced back in 2006 to be named the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year and the Burlington (IA) Pitcher of the Year. He went 8-6 in 24 starts for the Bees and his 2.53 ERA was 4th in the Midwest League, before he was promoted to High Desert for 3 starts at the end of the '06 season. A native of the Dominican Republic, Rosa was signed by KC as a non-drafted free agent on November 29, 2001.
