LAST GAME: Oklahoma edged Nashville 1-0 in ten innings on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. Brandon McCarthy, Kiko Calero, Yukinaga Maeda, and Bill White combined to shutout the Sounds on four hits and one walk. Maeda notched his fifth win of the year, while White earned his fourth save. Ryan Roberts walked to start the tenth inning and advanced to third when John Mayberry reached on an error. One out later, Joaquin Arias pinch hit for Casey Benjamin and singled to right to score Roberts.
STOPPED AT SIX: Oklahoma's six game losing streak was snapped with last night's 1-0 win at Nashville. The RedHawks division lead is back to five games over New Orleans after the Zephyrs allowed 12 runs in the eighth inning at Iowa last night in a 15-6 loss. The six-game skid was the longest losing streak of the season and the third longest over the last three years. The RedHawks dropped nine in a row from April 29 though May 7 in 2006 and seven straight from August 25 through 31 last year.
SIDE RETIRED:
Oklahoma starting pitchers had not retired the side in order in the first inning over their last 23 games, a streak broken last night. Brandon McCarthy faced just three batters in the bottom of the first, getting a strikeout, fly out, and a ground out. It was the first time RedHawk pitchers retired the side in order in a first inning since July 18 against Memphis at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
McCARTHY ON POINT:
Brandon McCarthy has his best outing of the season in Tuesday's win, allowing just two base runners on a hit and a walk over six innings while striking out four. The right-hander needed just 81 pitches to disperse the sounds over those six innings, and saw his batting average against drop from .298 to .237. McCarthy had been with Oklahoma since July 22 on rehab prior to getting activated and optioned this past Saturday. McCarthy had been on the Rangers disabled list with severe inflammation in his right forearm all season.
PINCH HIT GLORY:
After going hitless in their first ten pinch hit at bats, Oklahoma has knocked base hits in their last two. Casey Benjamin knocked a pinch hit single in the RedHawks loss on Saturday, while Joaquin Arias drove in the lone run last night with a base hit.
SLIM SHUTOUT:
The RedHawks 1-0 Tuesday win was their first victory of the season when scoring only one run. Oklahoma improved to 1-10 when scoring just one run in a game. RedHawk pitchers have now thrown seven shutouts this season, three more than they tossed all of last season, and one fewer than the total from 2006.
ROLLING ON:
Ryan Roberts extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single last night, while Casey Benjamin has hit safely in his last six. After going hitless in his first three Triple-A games, Ben Harrison has hits in his last five games.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Taylor Teagarden went 1-3 with a walk and two strikeouts in this morning's 8-7 Team USA loss to Korea. The US rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 lead, but could not hold on for the win. Team USA plays the Netherlands later tonight (9:30 pm CT/ 9:30 am Thursday Beijing time)... Nate Gold went 0-4 last night and saw his 14 game on-base streak snapped at 14 games... Elizardo Ramirez has allowed three runs or more in 16 of his 23 appearances this season, and has allowed at least one run in 22 out of those 23 games... Oklahoma has outscored Nashville 81-42 over the first 13 games of this season-long series.
