Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Vincent Sinisi lifted a base-loaded, sacrifice fly that scored Paul McAnulty with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Portland Beavers overcame a five-run deficit to defeat the Fresno Grizzlies 6-5 Tuesday night before 6,273 at PGE Park.
After Fresno reliever Vinnie Chulk issued leadoff walks to McAnulty and Justin Huber to start the bottom of the 11th, Will Venable reached on a bunt single and Sinisi's fly ball to left was enough to score McAnulty as the Beavers scored six unanswered runs to take the first game of the series.
Earlier, Venable belted his 14th home run of the season and Brett Dowdy set a new career high by hitting his sixth for the Beavers (63-59).
The comeback made a winner of newcomer Tyler Davis, who worked the scoreless top of the 11th to get his first Triple-A victory. Chulk (0-1) took the loss, his first in 16 appearances with the Grizzlies (57-66).
Brian Horwitz started the scoring with an RBI single, while Dowdy's two-out fielding error at short allowed another run to score and kept alive the Grizzlies' five-run first inning that was capped by Jake Wald's three-run double that narrowly escaped the grasp of Venable in center field.
The Beavers countered in the third, loading the bases and scoring two when Justin Huber hit a ground ball through second baseman Travis Denker. In the fifth, Dowdy hit a solo shot and Venable tied the game with a two-run liner over the wall in right field.
The Beavers will play host to the Grizzlies in a doubleheader Wednesday night, with the first of two, seven-inning games starting at 6:05 p.m.
NOTES: Portland Trail Blazers forward Channing Frye threw out the ceremonial first pitch to start the five-game series with the Grizzlies ... the Beavers will add right-handed pitcher Manny Ayala to the active roster for the start in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. Ayala was 6-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 16 appearances (13 starts) with Class AA San Antonio ... Peter Ciofrone has hit safely in 37 of his last 40 games and has scored a run in seven consecutive contests ... Portland reliever Edwin Moreno struck out four over 1 2/3 innings of work ... the Beavers are 11-4 in extra innings this season ... Portland has stranded 11 or more runners in three of the last four games.
