Game Keys - Iowa starter J.R. Mathes delivered eight solid innings allowing one run and the I-Cubs defeated the Zephyrs 5-1 on Wednesday night at Principal Park. The Cubs offense picked up where the left off on Tuesday night, scoring three times on five hits in the first inning. Iowa added a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh inning. Iowa slugger and the PCL hitter of the week continued to mash, drilling a two run home run in the first and scored three runs in the contest. Micah Hoffpauir had two hits in game one of the series and has drilled 5 home runs in his last six games. The lefty J.R. Mathes held the Zephyrs offense to five hits in eight innings and earned his seventh win of the year.

Game Notes: The Zephyrs have dropped two consecutive games in Des Moines and lost another game in the standings. The Zephyrs trail the first place Redhawks by seven games with 19 games to play. Carlos Muniz was optioned to the Zephyrs from New York and pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Zephyrs. Zephyrs pitcher Brandon Knight started for Team USA in the Olympic opener against Korea, Knight surrendered six earned runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Korea scored two runs in the ninth to beat the United States, 8-7.

Coming Up: The Zephyrs continue a four game series and a stretch of eight straight games against the Iowa Cubs on Thursday. The Z's will start LH Jon Niese (3-0) against RH Mitch Atkins (6-0). RADIO: AM 690 WIST.
