Lexington Legends News Release
The Savannah Sand Gnats made it two in a row over Lexington by beating the Legends 6-3 Thursday night in Savannah. The Legends out hit the Sand Gnats 11-4, but committed five errors and allowed four unearned runs.
Lexington scored three times in the top of the first inning. Jose Altuve led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a one-out single by J.D. Martinez. Jake Goebbert followed with a double, sending Martinez to third, from where he scored on a sacrifice fly by Kody Hinze. Jonathan Meyer's double scored Goebbert with the third run.
A two-run homer by Savannah's Wilmer Flores in the bottom of the first cut the lead to one at 3-2.
Savannah scored once in the fifth inning to tie the game, and took the lead with two in the sixth. All three runs scored without a hit. In the fifth, Pedro Zapata led off with a walk, went to second on an infield out, and scored on two wild pitches charged to Arcenio Leon, who entered the game in the fifth in relief of starter Zach Grimmett.
In the Savannah sixth, Dock Doyle walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Cesar Puello was hit by a pitch. Leon's errant pickoff throw to second allowed both runners to move up. Jeff Flagg grounded out as the runners held, but second baseman Jose Altuve bobbled a grounder by Alonzo Harris, and Doyle scored to give Savannah the lead. Puello went third on the play, and scored on a wild pitch by Jose Trinidad, who had relieved Leon.
The Sand Gnats added a final run in the eighth on a successful double steal. Puello led off with a single, the first Savannah hit since the second inning. He later scored from third base as Harris, who had walked, stole second.
John Church (1-1), who entered the game in the sixth inning, was the winning pitcher. Leon (1-1) took the loss.
Savannah has taken the first two games of the series, which continues Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
