Leon's Two-Run Single Gives Suns Win #1,999

The Hagerstown Suns earned their 1,999th win in franchise history with a 6-4 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets. Sandy Leon's two-run single in the eighth gave Hagerstown the winning runs.

Augusta scored in the first inning on a Thomas Joseph single to left off Suns starter Dan Rosenbaum to score Chris Dominguez for a 1-0 lead.

They struck again in the second as first baseman Luke Anders hit a solo home run over the center field wall for a 2-0 Augusta lead.

The Suns got on the board in the bottom of the third. With runners on the corners and two out, Francisco Soriano got caught in a rundown from first to second. While running, Marcus Jones broke from third and scored before Soriano was tagged out, cutting Augusta's lead to one.

The score remained until the bottom of the seventh. Off Jose Valdez with two out and no one on, designated hitter J.P. Ramirez slammed the ball to deep right for his third home run of the season, tying the game at two. After two singles, Eury Perez hit a ball to third which was thrown away by Dominguez, resulting in Jones scoring from second for a 3-2 lead.

The GreenJackets got back the lead in the eighth. With Wanel Vasquez (2-0) in relief with two outs and a man on second, right fielder Dan Cook homered to deep center, giving Augusta a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Suns responded off Ryan Verdugo (0-1). With first and second with no one out, Justin Bloxom singled to left to score Nicol from second to tie the game at four. After Destin Hood and Ramirez struck out, Jones walked to load the bases. Augusta brought in Jason Jarvis to pitch. His first batter, catcher Sandy Leon, drove a ground ball into center for a base hit, scoring Brett Newsome and Bloxom for the 6-4 lead, which was be the final score. Leon finished two-for-three with a walk, a steal and two RBIs.

Rosenbaum got his fourth straight no decision with six innings pitched, allowing two runs and striking out five. Glenn Gibson pitched a hitless seventh inning. Vasquez got a blown save, allowing two runs in the eighth, but picked up the win after Hagerstown got the lead in the eighth. Dean Weaver came into the ninth and earned his third save of the season, allowing just one runner.

Devan Kline in his first professional start for Augusta pitched five innings, allowing one run and striking out three. Valdez got a blown save for allowing two runs, only one earned, in 1.1 innings. Verdugo got the loss with three runs charged in one inning pitched.

With the victory, the Suns have won 1,999 games as franchise in their 30-year history. They improve to 12-9 on the season, winning their fourth straight, while Augusta falls to 12-10. Hagerstown returns to the field tomorrow to go for win number 2,000 against Augusta on Friday at 6:35 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium open at 5:35 p.m.
