Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Hickory Crawdads won their fourth straight game with a 4-0 shutout victory against the Charleston RiverDogs, before 4,291 fans at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston on Thursday night.
Hickory (12-10) received dominant pitching performances from both starter LHP Robbie Ross (2-3) and reliever RHP Braden Tullis, who combined to allow only three hits all night. Ross carried a no-hitter through the first four innings and ended up surrendering only three hits in his six shutout frames, while striking out four. Tullis pitched the final three scoreless, hitless innings and also struck out four to continue to subdue the RiverDogs bats.
The Crawdads jumped in front of the RiverDogs (10-12) in the top of the 3rd with a pair of runs off of Charleston starter RHP Graham Stoneburner (0-3). SS Leury Garcia started the inning with a triple and trotted home on a two-run blast by CF Miguel Velazquez over the left-center field wall. Garcia extended a season-high eight-game hitting streak, while Velazquez added to his team lead in homers (4) and RBIs (16).
Hickory moved ahead, 3-0, in the top of the fourth against Stoneburner. DH Cristian Santana got on with a leadoff walk, stole second and quickly took third on a wild pitch. 1B Mike Ortiz then brought Santana in with an RBI single, one of two basehits for Ortiz in the contest.
While Ross and Tullis continued to shut out the RiverDogs, the Crawdads kept the pressure on with a final run in the top of the ninth. 3B Matt West ripped a one-out triple into the left field corner and Santana followed with an RBI single up the middle to put Hickory ahead by four.
Tullis then went back out for a third inning in the bottom of the ninth and only allowed one batter to reach in the final scoreless frame, completing the 4-0 shutout win for Hickory. Tullis earned his first save of the season and Ross got the win, while Stoneburner was tagged with the loss for Charleston.
