Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Hagerstown, MD - It's said that prolonged exposure to the sun can cause health problems. For the Augusta GreenJackets, the problems occur late in encounters with the Suns. Hagerstown tallied five runs in the last two innings to come from behind and pull out a 6-4 win on Thursday night over the Jackets.
The GreenJackets led 2-0 early with a Tommy Joseph RBI single in the first and a Luke Anders solo home run in the second. Hagerstown cut into that lead in the third when Eury Perez was able to score on a rundown in between first and second involving Steven Souza.
Augusta's wheels first came off in the seventh when J.P. Ramirez tied things at two with two outs on a solo home run off Jose Valdez. Back-to-back singles off Valdez brought Perez back to the plate and when his grounder to third was mishandled and thrown away by Chris Dominguez, Marcus Jones trotted in from third to give the Suns their first lead of the night.
Daniel Cook made sure the Suns' lead was short-lived, clearing the 30-foot fence just to the left of dead center with a two-out, two-run home run to give Augusta a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth. Off Ryan Verdugo, the Suns put two men on base to open the inning and with runners at the corners, Justin Bloxom singled to left to tie the game at four.
Jason Jarvis entered later in the eighth with the game tied and the bases full. With two outs, Sandy Leon singled up the middle - just under the glove of Jarvis - to bring in a pair of runs and break the four-all tie. Ryan Cavan doubled with one out in the ninth inning, but was left at third as the game ended and the GreenJackets dropped their first two-run game of the season.
Verdugo (0-1) takes the loss in a night where the spot start of Devan Kline was somewhat lost in the GreenJackets inability to once again hold a late lead. Kline, in his first professional start, after 16 prior appearances out of the bullpen, threw five solid innings of one-hit baseball. He yielded only one unearned run, walked two and struck out three.
Wanel Vazquez (1-1) surrendered Cook's two-out homer in the eighth, but ends up with the win. Dean Weaver allowed just the Cavan double in the ninth to nail down his third save of the season.
The GreenJackets have now dropped four in a row while the Suns are headed in the opposite direction, picking up their fourth straight win in the contest. Augusta sends Kyle Vazquez (2-0, 1.50) to the mound to attempt to right the ship against Josh Smoker (0-3, 7.88). The Jackets need wins in each of their next two contests to split both the series and the road trip. First pitch will come at 6:35 p.m. in Hagerstown with the pregame action beginning at 6:20 p.m. on www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
