Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 19, 2011) - Hector Santiago threw a career-high eight innings, but allowed two home runs to Zach Zaneski that propelled Myrtle Beach to a 3-1 victory. Thursday's series finale at BB&T Ballpark marked Myrtle's fifth win in six games against Winston-Salem and gave the Pelicans the series victory.
Winston-Salem (18-22) opened things up in the bottom of the first inning. Daniel Wagner singled up the middle to begin the frame before he was sacrificed to second by Tyler Saladino. Wagner advanced to third on Jose Martinez's ground out, and then scored on a wild pitch during Ian Gac's at-bat.
Myrtle Beach (25-15) evened up the score in the second when Zach Zaneski knocked his fourth home run of the season.
In the top of the third inning, Santiago Chirino led off with a single off of Santiago. Jared Hoying followed with a single before Leury Garcia grounded out to third to advance the runners to second and third. Ryan Strausborger flew out to left field, but Chirino scored on the sac fly to put the Pelicans in front 2-1.
Meanwhile, after the single by Wagner in the first, Myrtle Beach starter Barret Loux set down ten straight Dash hitters before allowing a single to Martinez in the fourth. The tying run reached third in the sixth for Winston-Salem. With Martinez at third after a walk and a single by Gac, Andy Wilkins grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Zaneski belted his second homer of the game on the first pitch of the top of the seventh inning to put Myrtle in front 3-1.
Santiago (2-3) threw a career-high eight innings, but was saddled with the loss. He gave up three runs (all earned) on six hits and struck out six. Loux (3-3) picked up the win after allowing only one run (earned) and striking out five. Joseph Ortiz pitched three scoreless innings in relief and earned his third save in as many opportunities.
