Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - It's always tough to win a four-game series on the road in the Carolina League. But the Pelicans' battery of Barret Loux and Zach Zaneski teamed up to help the Pelicans take three out of four over the Dash with a 3-1 win. Loux bounced back with six strong innings while his catcher Zaneski cracked two opposite-field home runs in the Winston-Salem finale.
Loux allowed a leadoff single to Dan Wagner in the first and let him score on a wild pitch to put the Birds in a quick 1-0 hole. The right-hander buckled down to retire the next ten batters he faced as the Myrtle Beach offense gave him a lead.
Zaneski went deep to right-center field in the second inning for his fourth home run of the season to tie the game at one. The Pelicans took the lead against starter Hector Santiago in the third. Santiago Chirino and Jared Hoying started the frame with singles and after Leury Garcia moved the runners over with a groundout, Ryan Strausborger drove in Chirino with a sacrifice fly to put the Birds up 2-1.
Loux (3-3) stranded the tying run at second base in the fourth and fifth innings, but really ran into trouble in the sixth. After a one-out walk to Jose Martinez, Ian Gac executed a perfect hit-and-run to put runners at the corners with only one out. Against a tough lefty hitter in Andy Wilkins, Loux induced a 6-4-3 double play to escape trouble, preserved the lead and end his night.
The right-hander recovered from a rough start on Friday with six innings of one-run ball. The Houston native gave up just four hits, all singles, walking two and striking out five.
Zaneski tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with his second solo homer of the night, once again to the opposite field. The catcher's fifth long ball of the season capped his second multi-homer game of 2011. The former Rhode Island Ram is now batting .536 (15-28) with all five of his home runs against lefties.
Joe Ortiz came on for the Pelicans in the seventh, and set down the first seven batters he faced before Gac walked with one out in the ninth to bring up the tying run in Wilkins. Ortiz got the lefty to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to end the game and record his third save. The Caracas native has now tossed 20 consecutive scoreless innings.
Santiago (2-3) took the tough-luck loss as he tossed eight innings of three-run ball in his longest outing of the year. The lefty allowed six hits, walked one and struck out six.
Winston-Salem hosts Salem for the weekend while the Pelicans head to Wilmington for a three-game set beginning Friday night. Left-hander and Carolina League wins leader Robbie Ross (5-1, 2.79) goes for Myrtle Beach against Wilmington righty Tyler Sample (1-3, 2.51). First pitch at Frawley Stadium tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
After finishing the road trip this weekend in Wilmington, the Birds return home on May 24 to face the Salem Red Sox. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
