Pelicans Game Notes

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

- RHP Barret Loux (2-3, 4.29) at RHP Cameron Bayne (3-3, 3.50) -

STILL IN FRONT: Even with Wednesday's heart-breaking loss in game one, the win in the second game was a big one for the Pelicans. While Myrtle Beach earned a split, the Salem Red Sox team that is chasing the Birds in the Southern Division was swept in a home twinbill by Wilmington. The Red Sox have dropped six in a row, all at home, and have fallen in nine of their last ten since taking three straight from the Pelicans. At 24-15 Myrtle Beach is two games up, one in the loss column, on the 21-16 Red Sox. This weekend the Pelicans go to Wilmington while Salem visits Winston-Salem. After a Monday off day, the two clubs will clash in Myrtle Beach for three games starting Tuesday.

LEAGUE LEADERS: The Pelicans have scored the most runs in the Carolina League (187) and allowed the fewest (127). That gives them the best run differential in the circuit (+60), well ahead of second-ranked Wilmington (+28). The Birds lead the league in batting average at .264 and their .343 on base percentage is 15 points ahead of the next-highest club, Salem. On the mound, the Pelicans are the tops in ERA (3.00) and opponent batting average (.221). Myrtle Beach is the best in the field as well, making only 26 errors, well ahead of Frederick who has made the second-fewest with 33.

STAYING PUT ON THE BASEPATHS: The Winston-Salem Dash has not attempted a stolen base in the first three games of this series with the Pelicans. For the season, they have been by far the least-aggressive team on the bases in the Carolina League. As a team they have stolen 13 bases in 28 tries (46.4%), Myrtle Beach has the next-lowest percentage at 64.1% (35-54). The Dash has less than half the number of steals of the team with the second-fewest in the league, the Lynchburg Hillcats with 27.

JARED EXPRESS: Two of the Pelicans' three Jareds (along with Hoying), Bolden and Prince have caught fire in the season's second month. After slow starts for both, the outfielders have etched their names into the lineup cards day after day with resurgent bats. Bolden is batting .277 in May versus a .224 start in April and crushed a mammoth three-run homer in Wednesday's second game to turn a 3-0 Pelicans to 6-0 in the sixth. Prince's roaring May has been even more pronounced. After stumbling to a 4-for-45 start to the year, the Kingston, WA native has batted .333 (26-for-78) since including .391 in May (18-for-46).
