Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - The Santa Cruz Warriors (7-5) prevailed against the Memphis Hustle (5-7) on Saturday night at Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi, 126-124, to earn their sixth consecutive win.
Santa Cruz was led by guard Kendric Davis with 23 points and 14 assists in his third double-double of the regular season. Guard Pat Spencer came off the bench to match Davis with 23 points of his own, adding in seven rebounds and four assists. Forward Jackson Rowe contributed 19 points and eight rebounds, and forward Javan Johnson followed closely behind with 18 points. Guard Donovan Williams added 14 points, and guard Jimmy Whitt scored a career-high 12 points off the bench to round out a textbook team effort that saw six of nine available Warriors scoring in double-digits.
Forward Matt Hurt led the Hustle with 35 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Adonis Arms scored 24 points, and guard DeJon Jarreau followed with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Lucas Williamson contributed 16 points, and forward Cameron McGriff added 11 points and 10 rebounds as the third of three Memphis starters with double-doubles in the home loss.
The Hustle opened the contest shooting 3-for-3 from the three-point line to gain an early advantage, but a 12-0 Santa Cruz run mid-way through the quarter gave the visiting Warriors a 26-19 lead with 4:42 remaining in the frame. Zero turnovers and 11 first-quarter points from Donovan Williams boosted the Sea Dubs to end the quarter with a 42-31 lead. Santa Cruz pulled ahead by as many as 16 points in the second quarter before Memphis went on a 10-0 run and tied the game at 56 with 4:18 left to play in the period. The Hustle continued to ride their momentum to outscore the visitors, forcing the Warriors to enter the break trailing 68-66.
Despite losing Williams to consecutive technical fouls halfway through the third quarter, a Davis three-pointer gave the Warriors a 94-92 lead with 3:10 left in the frame. However, an 11-0 run by the Hustle coupled with a three-minute Santa Cruz scoring drought allowed Memphis to end the third quarter leading 103-96. A Jimmy Whitt dunk kicked off a 10-2 Santa Cruz run in a hard-fought fourth quarter that saw two tie scores and five lead changes, and both teams continued to battle down the line until a Johnson three-pointer with 1:39 remaining in the contest gave the Warriors the advantage. Santa Cruz managed to hold Memphis scoreless in the final 30 seconds of the game and come away with a 126-124 win.
The Warriors will remain in Southaven, Mississippi to face the Memphis Hustle again on Monday, January 29 at 5:00 p.m. (PT) in the second game of the series and the final contest of a four-game road trip before returning home to take on the Texas Legends on February 2 and 3.
