LAST SERIES MEETING: DALLAS 67, San Jose 64 ⢠Sunday, April 6, 2003 ⢠Reunion Arena â Will Pettis scored on a 2-yard run with 22.3 seconds remaining following a controversial holding penalty against the SaberCats to give Dallas a 67-64 win. The Desperados got the opportunity to score the winning TD after George Williams batted down a Jim Kubiak pass at the line of scrimmage on a fourth down play. Clevan Thomas was flagged for holding and Pettis scored on the next play. Daron Alcorn had a chance to tie the score with no time remaining but his 41-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. The lead changed hands five times in the fourth quarter as Dallas outscored San Jose 29-14 to overcome a 12-point deficit. Kubiak tossed 3 of his 8TD passes in the final stanza and completed 17-of-24 for 303 yards. Barry Wagner gave San Jose a 64-60 lead scoring on a 1-yard run on fourth down with 41 seconds left. The SaberCats opted for an on-side kick following the score but Dallas recovered on the SaberCats 6-yard line. Mark Grieb connected with James Roe on an 18-yard scoring play with just over 3 minutes left in the third to stake the SaberCats to their biggest lead of the game at 50-38. San Jose responded with a pair of Grieb scoring passes and a Sam Hernandez sack for a safety for a 16-7 lead with 4:12 left in the first quarter.

Now in his sixth season at the helm of the SaberCats, Darren Arbet owns the highest regular season winning percentage (.750) in league history among coaches with at least 20 victories and his 66 career wins rank him 8th in league annals. Named AFL Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002, Arbet has guided the SaberCats to four straight double-digit win seasons â the longest current streak in league history â and his teams have compiled a 54-12 (.818) regular season record since the start of the 2000 campaign. Under his direction the SaberCats have set league records for most regular season wins (13 â 2002), most wins in a season (16- 2002), most consecutive wins in a regular season (12 â 2002), most wins to end a season (11 â 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 â 2000-01).
Dallas â Will McClay, 1st season
5-3 (.625) reg. season and overall
0-0 career vs. San Jose
Will McClay was named Head Coach of the Dallas Desperados on Feb. 5 following the resignation of Joe Avezzano. McClay will continue to serve as the team's defensive coordinator, a position he has held since the team's inception in 2002. He also works in the Dallas Cowboys Player Personnel Department. Prior to coming to Dallas, he was the Assistant Director of Pro Scouting for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2001) and the player personnel director of the XFL's Orlando Rage (2001). He was the Grand Rapids Rampage's defensive coordinator/director of player personnel (1998-99) after serving in the same capacity for the Anaheim Piranhas (1997). He was defensive coordinator for the Florida Bobcats (1996) and the Milwaukee Mustangs (1995) after beginning his coaching career with the Detroit Drive (1993). He was a WR/DB for the Drive from 1989-92, helping them win three ArenaBowl titles in four trips.
RECENT RESULTS: SaberCats 62, TAMPA BAY 55 â James Roe caught a San Jose game record seven touchdown passes, including the game-winner with seven seconds left in regulation, and the SaberCats edged the defending ArenaBowl champion Tampa Bay Storm, 62-55, Sunday afternoon. Mark Grieb matched a San Jose record and career-high with nine scoring passes and completed 27-of-34 for 351 yards. He tossed six TD passes in the second half to help the SaberCats overcome a 17-point halftime deficit. Lawrence Samuels helped stake the Storm to a quick 14-0 lead. He caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Shane Stafford on the first offensive possession of the game and recovered a loose ball for a net recovery touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. A 30-yard Stafford to T.T. Toliver scoring play with eight seconds left in the first half gave Tampa Bay a 38-21 lead at the break. San Jose lost two fumbles and failed on a field goal attempt after a bad center snap in the first half. Roe scored all three San Jose touchdowns in the third quarter on grabs of 10, 12 and 29 yards and his sixth TD catch of the game, a 6-yarder with 12:28 remaining in the game, gave the SaberCats their first lead of the game at 48-45. Following a Grieb to Fred Coleman scoring toss of 26 yards, Storm kicker Matt George tied the game at 52-52 by connecting on a 21-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in the fourth. Grieb completed three consecutive passes to march San Jose from their own 5-yard line to the Tampa Bay seven setting up the game-winner. Roe, the Offensive Player of the Game, led all players with 11 receptions for 158 yards. San Jose defensive specialist Omarr Smith, who played with Tampa Bay last season, intercepted a desperation Stafford pass at the final horn. It was the 10th career interception for Smith as a SaberCat, tying him with Herschel Currie for fifth place on the team's career list. San Jose has now won four straight on the season and four consecutive games over Tampa Bay. The SaberCats return to action on Saturday, April 10 when they travel to Dallas to face the Desperados.

TRENDS:
ON THE ROAD AGAIN â The SaberCats broke their 1-game road losing streak with a 62-55 win at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4 and are 3-1 away from home in 2004. Since the start of the 2000 season the SaberCats have posted a 24-9 (.727) record in regular season road games. They went 6-1 on the road in both 2000 and 2002, had a 4-3 record in 2001 and went 5-3 last season. The team is 41-26 (.612) all-time in regular season road games.
COMEBACK KIDS â Over the last two games the SaberCats have shown the ability to come from behind and win. Against Los Angeles on Mar. 26, San Jose overcame a 14-point second quarter deficit to post a 55-52 win and last week the SaberCats trailed by 17 points at halftime before outscoring Tampa Bay 41-17 in the second half for a 62-55 win.
THAT SIXTIES SHOW â San Jose reached the 60 point mark for the 4th time this season and the 40th time in team history in their 62-55 win at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4. The SaberCats now own a 36-4 record in games where they score 60 or more points. San Jose is also the only team in the league to crack the 50-point mark in every game this season and leads the league with a scoring average of 60.3 ppg.
RUSH TD STREAK ENDS â After rushing for at least one score in 23 consecutive regular season games, the SaberCats have now gone two straight without a rush TD.
JUST WIN â San Jose's win at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4 gave Mark Grieb a career record of 48-9 (.842) in 57 regular season starts as the SaberCats' QB.
LIFE WITHOUT CLEVAN â In four games without two-time defensive player of the year Clevan Thomas, the SaberCats pass defense has allowed opposing QBs to throw for 1,321 yards (330.3 ypg) while completing 63.3 percent of their passes (105-of-166) for 23 TDs. In the four games with Thomas in the defensive backfield, opposing QBs managed just 1,010 yards (252.5 ypg) on 51.3 percent passing (86-of-156) with 21 TDs. The SaberCats, however, have not lost a game since Thomas' season-ending knee injury at New York on Mar. 7.
GOING UP â Mark Grieb has seen his pass completion, passing yardage and TD pass totals rise in each of the three games with Dallas. Grieb completed 18 passes for 211 yards and 5 TDs against Dallas on May 25, 2002, then tossed 25 completions for 305 yards and 6 TDs on June 29, 2002. At Dallas last year (Apr. 6), Grieb completed 28 passes for 329 yards and 7 TDs.
NOTES:
ROE, ROE, ROE â James Roe came up big once again for San Jose in its 62-55 win at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4. Roe tied an AFL record with 7 TD receptions and in the process set team records for TD scored and TD catches. Named the AFL's U.S. Army Ironman of the Week following his performance in a win over Los Angeles on Mar. 26, Roe tallied a season-high 11 catches for 158 yards with his record TD total against the Storm. Roe matched the league record held by seven other players, including Chris Jackson of Los Angeles who performed the feat the night before Roe did. Roe broke the team record of six TDs scored in a game, which was held by Jerry Reese, and his TD reception total bettered the old team mark of five held by four players.
GREAT GRIEB! â Mark Grieb had another stellar performance in San Jose's 62-55 win at Tampa Bay on April 4. Grieb tied a franchise record and career-high with nine TD passes in the win and moved ahead of Rickey Foggie into 10th place on the AFL's career TD pass list. Grieb equaled the records he set on July 6, 2001 when he tossed nine TD passes at Arizona. Grieb will pass Fred McNair for 9th on the league's all-time list with 28 more scoring passes and could move past Mike Perez for 8th place with 29 TD tosses.

The AFL passer rating record is 131.7 by Raymond Philyaw, who was with Indiana in 2001. Dallas' Jim Kubiak holds the completion percentage record of 69.7 set in 2003.
ON THE MARK II â In San Jose's last four games, all wins, Grieb has completed 77.5 percent of his passes (79-of-102) for 1,101 yards with 24 TDs and no INTs and has a passer rating of an amazing 151.2. Grieb has now thrown 111 consecutive passes without an interception.
THE RUNNING MEN â FBs Keala Keanaaina and Matt Kinsinger are racing to become the 5th player in team history to hit the 300-mark in career rushing yards. Kinsinger actually reached the 300 mark against L.A. on Mar. 26, but 13 of those came in his rookie season of 2001 with Houston. He ran for 3 yards at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4 to increase his San Jose career total to 293, leaving him one behind Keanaaina, who did not run the ball last week. The two have nearly identical stats on the season with Kinsinger leading the team with 51 rush yards and KK close behind with 44.

ALL-PURPOSE PLAYER â Rashied Davis registered a career-high 206 all-purpose yards in San Jose's win at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4 and passed the 1,000 yard mark (1,106) for the season ranking him 6th in the league. Davis totaled 139 yards on 5 kickoff returns and had a 43 yard missed field goal return, the 9th longest in team history. He became just the 9th player in team history to record a 200 all-purpose yard game. Davis leads the AFL in KOR average (29.0), KOR touchdowns (4) and is 4th in KOR yards with 753.
HE'S THE (COLE)MAN â Rookie Fred Coleman is making his mark in the AFL. Since being inserted into the lineup following an injury to Calvin Schexnayder in game 5, Coleman has totaled 11 receptions for 154 yards and 5 TDs. He had a career-best 4 catches for 48 yards and a 26-yard TD catch at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4 to go along with 2.5 tackles. Coleman has now caught a TD pass in all four games he's played.
THE LONGEST YARD(S) â OS James Hundon became the 2nd player in franchise history to register 4,000 career receiving yards when he totaled 72 at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4. JHun increased his career number to 4,043 and needs just 240 yards to pass Steve Papin as the team's all-time leader. Over his career, Hundon is averaging 15.4 yards per reception.
THE 900 CLUB â Barry Wagner was back on the stat sheet after tallying 4 catches for 50 yards and a TD at Tampa Bay on Apr. 4. Wags caught the 910th pass of his career to inch closer to the AFL's all-time leader Eddie Brown (949). THE JAMES GANG â James Hundon and James Roe continue to battle for the top spot on San Jose's career chart for receptions, receiving yards and TD receptions. Roe's record 7-TD catch game at Tampa Bay vaulted him past Hundon into the top spot in career TD catches with 92 and his season-high 11 receptions moved him further ahead of JHun in the catches category. Hundon did, however, amass 72 receiving yards to become the 2nd player in team history with 4,000 career yards. Hundon and Roe are the only players in team history to have consecutive games with 10-plus catches and 100-plus yards and Roe did it for a second time with his 11 catch, 158 yard effort at Tampa Bay. It was the 9th career 10-plus reception game and 15th career 100-plus receiving yard game of his career. Roe went 10 for 100 the previous week against Los Angeles. Hundon is the franchise leader with 19 career 100-plus receiving yard games.
