Columbus Destroyers News Release

COLUMBUS, OH – Columbus Destroyers defensive specialist JoJo Polk was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Week by the Arena Football League for week nine of the regular season, it was announced Tuesday.

Polk played a large role in the Destroyers' 55-46 victory over the Orlando Predators Sunday afternoon, finishing the contest with a game-high eight tackles (seven solo), two pass deflections and one forced fumble. He also recorded his second interception of the season in helping Columbus to their first-ever home win.

The Destroyers defense collected two second half stops on Sunday, both coming via the interception. Midway through the third quarter Polk picked off Orlando quarterback Connell Maynor inside the Columbus five-yard line, ending the Predators chances of a game-tying touchdown. The Destroyers then turned the turnover into points, taking a 41-27 lead which they would never relinquish. The second interception came courtesy of newcomer defensive specialist Del Lee, who intercepted Maynor late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Columbus.

On the season, Polk leads the team with 37 tackles (30 solo), eight pass deflections and two interceptions. He also has one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this season.

The league honor is the first for a Destroyers player in 2004. It also marked the first time in his career that Polk received an AFL weekly honor.

Along with Polk, other players receiving league recognition for their play in week nine were Los Angeles Avengers offensive specialist Chris Jackson and San Jose Saber Cats wide receiver/linebacker James Roe, who were named Co-Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week. Philadelphia Soul fullback/linebacker Chris Ryan was named U.S. Army Ironman of the Week.
