San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (April 6, 2004) - San Jose receiver/linebacker James Roe, who tied an Arena Football League record with seven touchdown receptions, was today named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the SaberCats' win at Tampa Bay on April 4.
Roe (6-1, 198, Norfolk State), who is in his fifth AFL season, earned Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors by helping the SaberCats (7-1) to a 62-55 victory over the defending ArenaBowl champion Storm (3-6) on Sunday. The All-Ironman performer hauled in 11 receptions for 158 yards with his record-tying seven touchdowns.
Five of Roe's scoring receptions came in the second half as the SaberCats outscored Tampa Bay 41-17 to overcome a 17-halftime deficit. The performance also established new San Jose records for receiving touchdowns, touchdowns scored and points (42) in a game.
Roe shares the honor with Los Angeles Avengers offensive specialist Chris Jackson, who also caught seven touchdowns on 11 receptions for a season-high 210 yards.
This marks the third time and second consecutive week that the former Spartan has earned an AFL weekly honor. Roe was honored with the U.S. Army Ironman of the week for his outstanding two-way play against the Los Angeles Avengers on March 26.
Other weekly award winners include Columbus Destroyers defensive specialist JoJo Polk (ADT Defensive Player) and Philadelphia Soul fullback/linebacker Chris Ryan (U.S. Army Ironman).
The SaberCats return to action Saturday, April 10, when they travel to Dallas to take on the Desperados. The game will be televised live in the Bay Area on NBC11 beginning at 5:30 p.m. (PDT).
San Jose plays its next home game on Friday, April 16, when it hosts the Chicago Rush. Tickets for that and all remaining SaberCats' home games can be purchased at all Northern California TicketMaster outlets, on-line at www.ticketmaster.com, or in person at the HP Pavilion box office.
