Coaches: Destroyers, Earle Bruce (2-6 in 2004, 15-22 overall). Dragons, Todd Shell (5-3 in 2004, 43-36 overall).

OVERVIEW: The Destroyers started the season slow, but after their first home victory they find themselves at 2-6 through nine weeks of play. Columbus lost six straight before their bye week, coming off a huge win over Orlando, they found much needed momentum to win their second game, first at home, in Columbus. Even after a great team performance against Orlando, Columbus still faces a tough schedule ahead. Columbus welcomes New York to town hoping to sweep the season series. The Destroyers seek to continue their winnings by avenging the previous loss to the Dragons, who have not lost since their last meeting with the Destroyers.

THE SERIES: The Destroyers-Dragons series dates back to the 2001 season with the all-time series favoring New York 5-4. The two teams alternated wins during the 2001 and 2002 seasons with each team wining two games on their home field. Last season, the Destroyers and Dragons split two meetings with each team winning on their opponent's field. Prior to moving to New York in 2001, the Dragons played out of Des Moines, Iowa and were known as the Iowa Barnstormers from 1995-2000. The Destroyers and Barnstormers met twice with Iowa claiming victory in both meetings in 1999 and 2000. The 2004 series started off just three weeks ago when the Dragons started the series with a 62-41 victory over the Destroyers. Saturday's game will be the 10th overall meeting between the teams.

The Destroyers would then score 13 unanswered points on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Vena to Perry and a pair of field goals from Steve Videtich. The two teams would trade touchdowns for the rest of the half including a failed Orlando onside kick attempt, which was scooped up by Perry and returned seven yards for a touchdown. The Destroyers went ahead for good on WR/LB Cornelius White's lone touchdown of the game when put the ball in his basket for the score on a 45-yard catch and run. A pivotal play came early in the fourth quarter when, Orlando receiver Travis McGriff was called for delay of game when his celebratory spike after a touchdown bounced into the stands. The ensuing Jay Taylor kick sailed right, leaving the Predators down by one, 40-41. The game was sealed on a four-yard dash around the left side By Vena after he saw all his receivers covered to put the Destroyers up by the final score of 55-46. The Predators had one last opportunity to score but came up short when a Maynor pass found its way into the hands of Columbus newcomer DS Del Lee for an interception in the endzone.

NEXT WEEK: Following Saturday's game in New York, the Destroyers will travel to New Orleans where they will take on the VooDoo in a nationally televised contest on NBC.

LAST SERIES MEETING: The Destroyers and Dragons last met on March 20 of this year when the Dragons handed the Destroyers their sixth consecutive loss this season in a 62-41 loss.

THE COACHES:
Columbus – Earle Bruce, 4th season (1st with Destroyers) 2-6 in 2004; 15-22 overall
Earle Bruce returns to the Area Football League as head coach and general manager for the Columbus Destroyers. Bruce landed his first collegiate head coaching job at the University of Tampa in 1972, where he fashioned a 10-2 record, including a win in the Tangerine Bowl. He took over at Iowa State University from 1973-1978, where he guided the Cyclones to eight wins in each of his last three seasons. Bruce succeeded long-time coach Woody Hayes at Ohio State in 1979 and went on to compile an 81-26-1 record from 1979-1987 in Columbus. He led the Buckeyes to two outright Big Ten titles (1979, 1984) and two co-championships (1981, 1986) and was named the 1980 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Following his tenure in Columbus, Bruce coached at the University of Northern Iowa in 1988 before taking over the Colorado State University program from 1989-92. He led the Rams to their best season in school history, a 9-4 record that included a win in the Freedom Bowl. Bruce began his coaching career in the AFL during the 1993-1994 seasons with the Cleveland Thunderbolts. He spent the 1994-1995 seasons with the St. Louis Stampede, making theirs the best record of an expansion football team at 9 and 4 and taking them to the playoffs. IF HISTORY REPEATS...
The Last time the Destroyers met the Dragons, White led his team in receiving yards and receptions, hauling in 11 balls for 154 yards and three touchdowns. His 11 catches and 154 yards gathered on March 20 were both career-bests. White set career marks for both catches and yards earlier in the year before surpassing those numbers three weeks ago against the Dragons. Look for White to step to the forefront on Saturday, especially after hauling in a season-low two catches last week versus Orlando. Entering week 10, White has recorded 53 catches (Tied 10th in AFL) for 738 yards (8th in AFL) and 16 touchdowns (14th in AFL).

CAPTURING LEAGUE HONORS
Last Tuesday, Destroyers defensive specialist JoJo Polk was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Week by the Arena Football League. Polk played a large role in the Destroyers' 55-46 victory over the Orlando Predators last Sunday afternoon, finishing the contest with a game-high eight tackles (seven solo), two pass deflections and one forced fumble. He also recorded his second interception of the season in helping Columbus to their first-ever home win. The Destroyers defense collected two second half stops last Sunday, both coming via the interception. Midway through the third quarter Polk picked off Orlando quarterback Connell Maynor inside the Columbus five-yard line, ending the Predators chances of a game-tying touchdown. The Destroyers then turned the turnover into points, taking a 41-27 lead which they would never relinquish. The second interception came courtesy of newcomer defensive specialist Del Lee, who intercepted Maynor late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Columbus. On the season, Polk leads the team with 37 tackles (30 solo), eight pass deflections and two interceptions. He also has one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this season. The league honor is the first for a Destroyers player in 2004. It also marked the first time in his career that Polk received an AFL weekly honor.

PENALTY FREE...ALMOST
Prior to last week's game, the Destroyers had a problem with too many flags flying not in their favor, making them one of the most penalized teams in the AFL. On Sunday however, the Destroyers played nearly mistake free, only being penalized three times after entering the game with an average of 10 penalties per game. Sunday marked only the third time this season that the Destroyers drew fewer penalties than their opponent (CAR 2/13, DAL 2/29). The Destroyers have been penalized 77 times for 504 yards in 2004.

REMATCH
This week's rematch with the New York Dragons will be the second rematch of the season for the Destroyers. On March 13 the Destroyers took on the Philadelphia Soul for the second time this season, which the Destroyers lost in the last minute of play 43-41. The Destroyers' first game with Philadelphia was a 20 plus-point loss, as was the first game with the Dragons. Columbus will try to prevent a repeat last minute-rematch loss and have their first winning streak of the season.

A GAME OF FIELD POSITION
Last week verses the Predators, Columbus started with the ball on the short side of the field five times. They started on the 19, the nine, 14, 20 and 13 yard-lines of Orlando, converting each possession but one, when they turned the ball over on downs at the one yard-line, into points. Twenty points in all were scored when the Destroyers had less than 20 yards to get to the end-zone.

NOT PICKY WITH PICKS
The Columbus Destroyers has, as a team, seven interceptions to its credit, all coming at the hands of six different players. WR/LB Cornelius White, DS JoJo Polk, who has two, WR/DB Ryan Sloth, WR/DB Titcus Pettigrew, DS Lavar Glover and DS Del Lee all have interceptions this season for the Destroyers.

RETURN TO SENDER
The Destroyers have scored 36 touchdowns this season, six of which have come via returns. Columbus' six returns for touchdowns are currently tied for first in the Arena Football League (COL).
