Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs dropped the opener of a six-game homestand on Tuesday, losing 4-1 to Sioux Falls at Haymarket Park. The game was shortened to eight innings because of rain.

Sioux Falls starter Travis Kane (7-4) allowed a run to Lincoln in the first inning, but held the Saltdogs in check after that, pitching six innings and allowing just five hits. Jonny Kaplan tripled with one out in the first and came home on Dustin Yount's RBI grounder, but only two more Lincoln baserunners made it as far as third base the rest of the night.

Lincoln starter Jason Jarvis (2-6) didn't pitch poorly, but after allowing a run in the top of the first, he gave up the decisive three runs in the top of the fourth. Former Saltdog Josh Patton led off the frame with a solo home run, and three straight singles after that plated the second run of the inning. A throwing error and a sacrifice fly brought home the final run of the night for the Canaries.

Heavy rains came to Haymarket Park just as the bottom of the ninth was beginning, forcing the umpires to call the game after a half-hour delay. Because the bottom of the ninth was never completed, the scoring reverted to how it stood after the end of the eighth, giving Canaries reliever Josh Kite his first save of the season.

Kaplan finished the night 2-for-3 with the triple and a run scored. Shawn McGill and Mario Delgado also had two hits apiece for Lincoln, which held onto its one-game lead over St. Paul in the North Division of the American Association. The Saints fell 1-0 to Sioux City.

The Saltdogs and Canaries play game two of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05. R.D. Spiehs is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln.
