Airhogs win via forfeit after lenthy rain delay

Grand Prairie, TX (07.15.08) -After a 2 hour and 15 minute time rain delay, the Grand Prairie AirHogs grabbed the 9-4 victory over the Shreveport Sports on a forfeit in the bottom of the fifth.

The AirHog's led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot for Mike Conroy. Aaron Garza was beaned afterward, earning an ejection for the pitcher Leo Tyson. Shreveport manager Terry Bevington came out to argue the call and was ejected as well. He signaled his team to leave the field and after ten minutes, the game was officially ruled a forfeit by the umpires.

Shreveport grabbed the first run of the game in the top of the first with a solo homerun blasted to left by Justin Humphries setting the score at 1-0.

However in the bottom of the first, the AirHogs were determined to clasp a strong lead on the Sports. Derek Nicholson earned the RBI single to bring in David Espinosa for Grand Prairie's first run of the game. Edwin Maldonado and Nicholson both came home on errors, one by the pitcher and one by the center fielder. Brandon Carter then came up to smash one to right getting the two run single giving Grand Prairie the 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Grand Prairie' s bats were still hot. Maldonado hit a sacrifice fly to left bringing in Espinosa. Then, Nicholson came up with a two RBI triple for the 8-1 lead.

The Sports came back in the top of the fifth to shorten the AirHogs lead. Bobby Bratton brought in Deacon Burns on a RBI single to left, and Wade Robinson came in on an error by the center fielder. Shreveport earned one more run in the inning setting the score at 8-4.

Justin Garcia (6-3) earned the win pitching 5.0 innings with six hits, four runs, one walk, and three strikeouts.

Bric Steed (0-1) earned the loss pitching 3.1 innings with seven hits, four runs, five walks, and one strikeout.

Grand Prairie prepares to take on Shreveport at home in the final game of their series June 16 at 7:05p.m
