St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (July 15, 2008) - The only mystery left in the game on Tuesday night was whether or not the St. Paul Saints would be no-hit by Nick Singleton. They got their hit, but not much else as they were blanked 11-0 by the Sioux City Explorers at Midway Stadium in front of 6,133.

Singleton didn't give up a hit until two were out in the seventh inning. Tim Brown hit a grounder to the left of second baseman Alex Llanos, who raced to the ball, slid on the edge of the grass to knock down the ball, but couldn't pick it up and Brown reached with an infield single. Brent Krause followed with a single to center, extending his hitting streak to 10 games, but that was all the Saints would get against Singleton who hurled 8.0 shutout innings allowing two hits while walking three and striking out six. The Saints wound up with three hits total on the evening, their second lowest output of the season.

The Explorers got all the run support for Singleton in the first. Dustin Jones singled to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jason Tuttle. With two outs Chris Grossman hit a lined shot to Tony Mansolino at short, but the ball handcuffed him, glanced off the heel of his glove and trickled behind him allowing Jones to score.

The Explorers put up two more in the fourth when Alex Llanos walked. On a hit and run, Grossman doubled down the right field line, scoring Llanos. Two fly balls later and Grossman scored to make it 3-0.

The Explorers put it away in the fifth by putting up five runs, the final three came on a three-run homer from Juan Camacho, his fifth of the season.

The same two teams meet Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. in the second game of the three game series. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (9-1, 3.19) to the mound against Explorers RHP Paige Dumont (4-2, 3.04). It is "Even a Monkey Can Do It" presented by Zubaz. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on a tape delay on Relevant Radio 1330 at 6:00 p.m. Fans can listen on line at saintsbaseball.com beginning at 1:00 p.m.
