Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-7) won 4-1 over the Lincoln Saltdogs (8-6) in a rain-shortened eight inning game on Tuesday night at Haymarket Park.

The Canaries got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Grant Richardson walked and advanced to second base on a single by Will Smith. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position for Beau Torbert. Torbert hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Richardson for his league leading 58th RBI of the season. Richardson's run put the Canaries ahead, 1-0.

Lincoln tied the game in the bottom of the first. Jonny Kaplan hit a one-out triple, and then scored when a ground ball by Dustin Yount was misplayed by Canaries first baseman Patrick Reilly. After one inning, the game was tied, 1-1.

The Birds went ahead again in the fourth inning. Josh Patton started the inning with his ninth home run of the season, and third in the ballpark of his team for the last five years. Patton's solo shot put the Canaries up 2-1. Ben Van Iderstine and Patrick Reilly followed with back-to-back singles to put two runners on base for Paul Smyth. Smyth singled to centerfield to score Van Iderstine, and give the Canaries a 3-1 lead. An errant throw home by Saltdogs centerfielder Jonny Kaplan allowed Reilly to advance to third on the play. A sacrifice fly by Kennard Bibbs scored Reilly. After three and a half innings, the Canaries led 4-1.

The Canaries held a 4-1 lead when the game was postponed by rain in the bottom of the ninth inning. The storm prevented the game from being resumed, and the game was called with the Canaries winning 4-1 in a rain shortened eight innings.

Travis Kane (7-4) picked up the win for the Canaries, Jason Jarvis (2-6) suffered the loss, and Josh Kite picked up his first save of the season.
