Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Lincoln Saltdogs lost a wild game to open the second half on Tuesday, dropping a 12-8 decision at Sioux City. Lincoln is now 22-27 overall on the season.
Sioux City scored the decisive runs in the bottom of the eighth, right after Lincoln had tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the eighth. Lincoln's Pichi Balet threw out a runner at the plate to keep the game tied at eight for the moment, but after an intentional walk loaded the bases with two out, Matt Reilly (1-2) walked Derek Schermerhorn to bring in the go-ahead run. Jason Colson followed with a three-run double to put the game away.
The story of the first half of the game was the wildness of both starting pitchers. Lincoln's Brian Campbell couldn't get an out in the fourth inning, walking the first three batters of the frame on 12 pitches before being lifted. Campbell walked six overall in his three-plus innings of work, and threw a league-record five wild pitches. Sioux City's Trevor Fox wasn't any better, walking eight in his four-plus innings and allowing seven runs. Overall, the two pitching staffs combined to walk 22 batters, eleven for each team.
Lincoln took the early lead when Josh Burrus homered, his tenth of the year, to lead off the game. They held a 2-0 lead after the top of the second, but Sioux City used three walks in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up. Steve Alexander hit a two-run single in the third, and the Saltdogs added another run in the fourth, but the X's plated three in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game again. Alexander hit a two-run homer, his ninth of the season, in the fifth to put Lincoln up 7-5, but two Explorers runs in the bottom of the fifth tied the game once more. Sioux City took an 8-7 lead in the seventh, but Lincoln squared the count in the top of the eighth before the final X's rally.
Alexander finished the night 2-for-4 with four RBI. Pichi Balet went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored, and Brandon Jones had an RBI and a run against his former team.
Lincoln tries to even up the series Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Lefty Zac Cline will make the start for the Saltdogs.
