Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City.....The Explorers broke open an 8-8 tie scoring four runs in the eighth inning to defeat Lincoln 12-8 to start the second half of the season.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Derek Schmerhorn walked to score Justin Nelson, who had earlier walked in the inning. Then newcomer Jason Colson doubled into the left field corner that scored three more X's and made the final score 12-8.
Both starting pitchers had control problems. Explorer starter Trevor Fox walked a season high eight in four innings while Lincoln starter Brian Campbell walked six in three innings. Between both teams there were a total of 23 walks in the contest. Campbell also threw five wild pitches in the three innings which set an American Association record for wild pitches in a game by one pitcher.
Catcher Brett Mieras had three RBI's to lead the Explorers while James Boone and Alex Llanos both had two hits each.
Explorers relief pitcher Kyle Frets, making only his second appearance since joining the team, hurled three innings of one-hit ball to keep the Saltdogs at bay. David Trahan pitched the final two innings to record the victory.
The Explorers and Lincoln will meet in the second game of the three-game series Wednesday at Lewis and Clark Park. Game time will be 7:05.
