St. Paul Saints News Release
WICHITA, KS (July 7, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints were looking to do something no other team had done this season, defeat the Wichita Wingnuts in two consecutive games at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Unfortunately, each time they scored, the Wingnuts had an answer and the Saints lost 8-7 on Tuesday night.
The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles from Alex Fonseca and Brent Krause. The Wingnuts, however, answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on Greg Porter's RBI ground out.
The Wingnuts took a 5-2 lead in the fourth as they sent 10 men to the plate. Saints starter Reed Dickert led off by walking Brenan Herrera and then gave up a single to Josh Horn. After Nick Blasi's ground out moved the runners to second and third, Dickert intentionally walked Porter to load the bases. Dickert, however, walked Dustan Mohr to force in a run. Kelly Hunt's single drove home two and Steve Pearson's ground out scored Mohr to finish off the scoring in the inning.
With the score 6-2 in the sixth the Saints cut the deficit to two as Jake Butler led off the inning with a solo homer to left, his 12th of the season. With one out Jeff Eure reached on an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Scott Knazek's double making it 6-4.
Dickert, however, couldn't keep it that way giving up a solo homer to Blasi, his third of the season making it 7-4.
The Saints made it 7-6 in the seventh when Fonseca reached on a two base error when center fielder Blasi dropped a fly ball. Jason Cooper followed with an RBI double and would later score on Eure's sacrifice fly.
The Wingnuts once again had an answer in the bottom of the inning when Pearson led off the inning with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored on Michael Sharp's single making it 8-6.
The Saints got to within a run in the eighth when Knazek led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Anthony Norman's single, but he would be left stranded there and the Saints went down in order in the ninth.
The same two teams meet Wednesday night in game three of the four game series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium against the Wichita Wingnuts. The Saints send RHP Mutch Wyile (5-4, 4.98) to the mound against Wingnuts RHP Adam Cowart (4-1, 2.68). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
