ST. PAUL, MN - The Lincoln Saltdogs earned their first win of 2010 on Monday, beating St. Paul 3-2. Lincoln improves to 1-4 on the season.

Both teams missed multiple chances to take control of the game, but the Saltdogs finally got a much-needed key hit in the top of the ninth. In a tie game, Brandon Jones led off the frame with a solo home run off of Saints closer Hunter Davis (0-1). St. Paul put the tying run on first with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, but Chris Thompson closed it out for his first save. Catcher Shawn McGill actually recorded the final out, gunning down Jason Cooper as he tried to steal second.

Lincoln took the early lead, plating two runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Juan Richardson. The Saltdogs left the bases loaded in the second, however, and their bats went silent as St. Paul clawed its way back. Gerard Haran's RBI double made it 2-1 in the fourth, and Kevin Millar hit an RBI single in the fifth to tie it. Lincoln starter Jim Paduch departed with two out and the bases loaded in the fifth, but reliever Chris Cullen induced a groundout to end the threat.

It was Cullen who then got in trouble in the bottom of the sixth. He walked leadoff man Gerard Haran, and then threw wildly on a pickoff attempt to advance him to third. Cullen then walked Brandon Carter, who promptly stole second. After falling behind Steve Mays 2-0, Cullen departed with an apparent injury. Lefty Nolan Chestnut (1-0) entered the game, got Mays to pop out to shallow center, and struck out Coby Smith for the second out. Chestnut hit Josh Alley with a pitch to load the bases, but struck out Millar looking to end the threat.

The Saltdogs missed a chance of their own in the eighth inning, loading the bases with nobody out but failing to score. Lincoln left nine men on base in the contest, while St. Paul stranded 12. Both teams had only six hits, but the game also featured 14 walks and three hit batsmen.

Lincoln and St. Paul play game two of their three-game series Tuesday night at 7:05. Right-hander Chris Britton will take the mound for the Saltdogs.

The home opener for Season Ten of Saltdogs Baseball takes place May 25 against Wichita. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
