St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The highlight of the night for the St. Paul Saints came when they were already down 10 runs in the ninth inning. They turned the first triple play in franchise history that gave everyone something to cheer and smile about despite losing 12-2 to the Iowa Cubs on Thursday night at CHS Field in front of 5,187.
With the bases loaded and nobody out in the ninth Ian Miller hit a line drive towards third baseman Daniel Descalso who leaped in the air and caught the ball for a brief moment. As he came down towards the ground the ball came out of his glove and landed behind him. The runners froze as Descalso went back to pick up the ball. He threw home for the first out, catcher Tomás Telis fired to third, where shortstop JT Riddle was covering, for the second out and Riddle threw to second baseman Drew Maggi at second for the 5-2-6-4 triple play.
The Saints put themselves in a hole after the first inning as the I-Cubs put up five with the first five hitters reaching on base hits. Dee Strange-Gordon led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Trent Giambrone. Michael Hermosillo made it 1-0 with an RBI double. A two-run single from Trayce Thompson put the I-Cubs up 3-0. That was followed by an RBI double from Tyler Ladendorf making it 4-0. The final run came on an RBI single by Tony Wolters increasing the I-Cubs lead to 5-0.
Ladendorf came calling in the third with a solo shot to left, his first of the season, making it 6-0.
The I-Cubs put the game out of reach in the fourth when they loaded the bases on a double and back-to-back walks. Yennier Cano made his Saints debut after that and walked back-to-back hitters to force in a pair of runs making it 8-0. Nick Martini then crushed a grand slam to straightaway center, his second of the season giving the I-Cubs a 12-0 lead.
The Saints two runs came on an RBI groundout by Damek Tomscha in the fourth and a solo homer by Descalso in the seventh, his second of the season.
The same two teams meet in the fourth game of the six-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Andrew Albers (2-2, 7.03) to the mound and the I-Cubs are TBA. The game can be seen on FOX 9+ and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
