Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-12) were shutout for the fifth time in 12 games, losing their fourth in a row by the score of 7-0 against the St. Paul Saints (9-9) on Tuesday afternoon at Midway Stadium.

The Saints drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning. After Steve Butler blooped a single into right-field to reach base, Alex Fonseca followed with a bunt up the first base line. Canaries first baseman Patrick Reilly fielded the bunt and attempted to tag out Fonseca, but the runner went around the tag and reached first safely. Following a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Schmiesing to move the runners to second and third, Jason Cooper walked to load the bases. Brent Krause came up with the bases loaded, and drew a walk to force in Steve Butler for a 1-0 Saints lead. Canaries starting pitcher Jino Gonzalez got the next two batters out to end the inning without further damage.

St. Paul added two more runs in the sixth inning. With two on and two out, Fonseca doubled to score Jacob Butler and Steve Butler. The runs gave the Saints a 3-0 lead.

The Saints added four more runs in the eighth inning when Brent Krause hit a grand slam, his ninth home run of the season. Krause's blast off of Ryan Grant put the Saints ahead by the 7-0 final.

Charlie Ruud (5-3) got the win in his first start following a brief 18-day retirement, keeping the Canaries off the scoreboard for 7.1 innings and allowing just four runs and one walk. Jino Gonzalez (2-5) gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings, and suffered the loss as the Canaries were shutout in Jino's second straight start.

The Canaries and Saints continue the four-game series on Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium next Friday, when they host the Wichita Wingnuts at 7:05 p.m. Next Friday's game will feature Post-Game Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
