ST. PAUL, MN (July 28, 2009) - Brent Krause etched his name into the St. Paul Saints record book, but he was overshadowed by a man whose name appears there more than anyone else in Saints history, Charlie Ruud. The Saints got a superb pitching performance from Ruud in a 7-0 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday afternoon in front of 6,088.

Nearly two weeks after announcing his retirement and coming back because the Saints were short on arms, Ruud was brilliant over 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball allowing just four hits while walking two and striking out two. The all-time winningest pitcher in Saints history notched another one, allowing just one runner to reach second and never allowing more than one runner on base in any inning. He retired eight of the final nine batters he faced and never got into any real trouble. The only runner to reach second was Joe Anthonsen who singled to short with two outs in the third and stole second. Ruud, however, got Tim Hutting to fly out to center to end the game.

The story on offense was Krause. In the third the Saints loaded the bases on a single by Steve Butler, a bunt single from Alex Fonseca and after a sacrifice bunt from Andrew Schmiesing, a walk to Jason Cooper. Krause then walked with the bases loaded to give the Saints 1-0 lead.

The Saints gave Ruud some run support in the sixth when Jacob Butler led off with a single to center and with two outs Steve Butler walked. Alex Fonseca then ripped a pitch down the third base line scoring both runners on the double to make it 3-0.

In the eighth Krause put his name in the record books. Scott Knazek led off when he was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Steve Butler's bunt single. He finished the game 3-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Fonseca sacrificed the runners over and Schmiesing was intentionally walked to load the bases. After Cooper fouled out Krause hit a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam, his ninth homer of the season. The grand slam was his fourth in his Saints career, surpassing Glen Davis' total of three. Krause has now homered in back-to-back games and finished the day 2-4 with a double, grand slam, five RBI and a run scored.

The same two teams meet Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. in game three of the four game series at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Mitch Wylie (6-5, 4.81) to the mound against Canaries RHP Ben Moore (4-6, 4.75). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard live on Relevant Radio 1330. It will be a celebration of the Chinese Year of the Ox.
