St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 24, 2010) - The great debate between religion and science rages on and the St. Paul Saints are ready to take sides.both of them.
On Wednesday, July 7, to mark the 150th Anniversary of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, the St. Paul Saints will distribute a giveaway item to allow fans to settle the Evolution vs. Creationism argument in a truly unique way. The first 2,500 fans will receive a spinning bobble head. One of the heads will be that of Darwin while the other will be of Cro-Magnon Man. One hand of the body will hold an apple while the other will stretch lower to the ground.
"There may be no bigger debate than this," said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer. "No matter which side of the debate you fall this giveaway item is for you. The happy medium, for one night, is fun."
In-game promotions during the game will ensure that fun will be had by both sides. Those favoring creationism will have a chance to bob for apples. In the seventh inning, everyone will rest.
For those on the evolution side, fans will be forced to adapt to their surroundings whether in the left field bleachers or hot tubs. They will honor the Saints' evolutionary chain and some may participate in contest to find the best Tarzan call.
This is not the first time that the independent ballclub has tackled a controversial issue or debate. In both 2004 and 2008 the Saints held a Bobblection in which fans could choose which candidate they supported in the Presidential election with a bobblehead giveaway. Politics was also the theme in 2009 for the Al Franken/Norm Coleman "Re" Count Doll. In 2002, during Major League baseball's labor unrest, the club gave away seat cushions allowing fans to show their support by choosing to sit on either Commissioner Bud Selig or union chief Donald Fehr.
The promotion had been originally scheduled for June 30, but has been rescheduled for the July 7 home game versus Wichita. Fans who purchased tickets for the June 30 game in order to receive the spinning head bobble may exchange their tickets for the July 7 promotion by visiting the Saints Box Office or calling 651-644-6659.
Gametime is 7:05 p.m. on July 7 with gates opening at 6 p.m. For tickets, please contact the Saints box office at 651-644-6659 or visit saintsbaseball.com.
