St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA (June 24, 2010) - The story lines were endless on Thursday night at Lewis and Clark Park: Sioux City Explorers starter David Trahan struck out a career high 12, St. Paul Saints starter Jake Schmidt struck out a career tying high eight, Schmidt had a perfect game going into the sixth and a no hitter heading into the seventh, but in the end the story line became the Saints trying to hang on to a lead. They did, winning a 5-4 as they snapped their six game losing streak.

Schmidt was dealing all night long retiring the first 16 batters he faced until he walked Jared Keel with one out in the sixth. He got out of the inning without anybody else reaching. In the seventh, with the no-hitter in tact he retired Derrick Hale on strikes, but then St. Louis Park native TJ Bohn came to the plate. A 1-2 pitch nearly struck out Bohn, but it was called a ball inside. The very next pitch was drilled over the left-center field wall to end the no-hitter and the shutout, making it 5-1.

In the eighth Schmidt ran out of gas as he loaded the bases with one out walking Keel and giving up singles to Paul Bridenbaugh and Dustin Jones. He was removed for lefty Payton Tweddale who struck out pinch hitter Brett Mieras. Jon Plefka then came out of the bullpen and got Bohn to pop up on the infield, but first baseman Ole Sheldon dropped the ball allowing two runs to score and making it 5-3.

It was the same score going into the bottom of the ninth and Plefka ran into control problems. With one out he walked three straight to load the bases and Joe D'Alessandro came out of the bullpen to close it out. He struck out Bridenbaugh for the second out of the inning. Jones then singled off the glove of D'Alessandro to cut the lead to one. That meant the number two spot in the order came up, but the problem was a pitcher was forced to hit because the Explorers needed to use their designated hitter in the field in the ninth. Pitcher David Welch struck out to end the game.

The Saints took a 2-0 lead in the first when Ole Sheldon singled and Jason Cooper hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the season and second of the series.

In the seventh the Saints looked like they were going to put the game away. With one out Josh Alley singled and stole second. With two outs Cooper was intentionally walked and Brent Krause was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gerard Haran then dropped a double into left-center scoring two and the throw from center fielder Jones to third base went into the dugout allowing a third run to score giving the Saints a 5-0 lead.

The Saints now head home to play a three game series against the Wichita Wingnuts at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send LHP Ryan Morse (2-2, 4.30) to the mound against Wingnuts RHP Sean Teague (1-1, 0.82). The Saints will look at Minnesota's second season: Road Construction. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330).
