St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - Make it three straight wins since the St. Paul Saints were no-hit on Wednesday night. On Sunday afternoon at CHS Field, the Saints pitching dominated the Indianapolis Indians in a 5-1 victory in front of 3,168. The Saints improved to 8-3 on the season and won their second consecutive series.
Jake Faria got the start for the Saints and was strong in his 4.0 innings of work. He retired six of the first seven before his lone hiccup in the third in which he allowed just one run after loading the bases with nobody out. Michael Perez walked and Ji-Hwan Bae doubled him to third. A walk to Travis Swaggerty loaded the bases. Oneil Cruz knocked in a run with a fielder's choice groundout giving the Indians a 1-0 lead. Faria got out of the jam without further damage when Cruz was thrown out trying to steal second and Rodolfo Castro went down on strikes. Faria went 4.0 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out five.
The Saints answered immediately in the bottom of the inning as Elliot Soto reached on a one out fielding error by the third baseman Castro. David Bañuelos knocked home Soto with a double off the wall in left knotting the game at one. With two outs and Bañuelos at third, Royce Lewis gave the Saints a 2-1 lead with an RBI single to left.
Chi Chi González was magnificent out of the bullpen for the Saints. He worked 3.0 hitless, scoreless innings walking two and striking out one as he recorded his second win of the season.
The Saints got a little breathing room in the sixth as Royce Lewis led off with an infield single to third. He moved to second on a groundout and Curtis Terry walked. After a pitching change, a wild pitch advanced the runners and Jake Cave's RBI groundout made it 3-1. The Saints took a 4-1 lead when Chance Sisco hit a grounder to first and the underhanded throw by Mason Martin alluded the pitcher Nathan Kirby and went into the Saints dugout for an error as Terry scored.
Reliever Trevor Megill worked a scoreless eighth for the Saints walking one and retiring the other three hitters on three groundouts.
The Saints added an insurance run in the eighth as Mark Contreras reached on a one out single to first. He moved to third on a double by Terry and an RBI groundout by Cave scored Contreras giving the Saints a four-run cushion.
Ian Hamilton made his first appearance of 2022 and worked a scoreless ninth giving up two hits and striking out one.
The Saints have Monday off and return to action on Tuesday against the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) at Fifth Third Field at 5:35 p.m. (central). Both teams are TBA. The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
