
Saints Pitcher Peterson Named Teamline Direct Pitcher of the Month for July

ST. PAUL, MN (August 2, 2010) - He didn't begin the season as a starter, but when Zach Peterson was given the opportunity to start on June 27 he made sure he would finish the season as one. Peterson was named the Teamline Direct Pitcher of the Month for July in the American Association.
The 25-year-old Peterson threw 5.0 shutout innings in his first start on June 27 and has taken off from there. In his first start in July he hurled 6.2 shutout innings against the Wichita Wingnuts in front of nearly 9,000 fans at Midway Stadium on the fourth. During July he was 5-0 with a 2.21 ERA in five games. In 32.2 innings pitched he walked just eight while striking out 23. He won all six games in which he started.
For the season Peterson is 6-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 20 games. He is currently second in the league in ERA. In 62.2 innings pitched he has walked 17 and struck out 45 while opponents are hitting .245 against him.
Peterson was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Royals organization in June of 2007. During that season he set a Pioneer League record by striking out 11 consecutive batters on August 21 vs. the Billings Mustangs.
With the Kansas City Royals organization Peterson had a tremendous three seasons. In 2009 he split time between Single-A Burlington and Single-A Wilmington. With Burlington he was 3-2 with a 3.63 ERA in 10 games (six starts). In 39.2 innings pitched he walked just 10 and struck out 21 while opponents hit .250 against him. He was even better in Wilmington going 2-0 with a 2.15 ERA and three saves in 23 relief appearances. In 37.2 innings pitched he walked just nine, struck out 15 while opponents hit .223 against him.
This is the first Teamline Direct Pitcher or Player of the Month Award the Saints have received this season. Outfielder Josh Alley is the only other Saint to receive an American Association honor this season when he was awarded the Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week of June 12-18.
