St. Paul Saints News Release

For the time being the St. Paul Saints are 5-0 losers to the Sioux City Explorers on Monday night at Lewis and Clark Park, however, manager George Tsamis filed a protest after the game was called after five innings.

With the Saints trailing 5-0 in the top of the sixth inning Jason Cooper led off with a double and Brent Krause was hit by a pitch. The rain continued to fall and come down hard. The umpires pulled both teams off the field and the only thing on the infield that was covered was home plate and the pitchers mound. After the rain had stopped there was no diamond dry in the ballpark to try and seep up the water. They tried to wait for the infield to dry, but to no avail as the game was officially called at 10:06 p.m. Tsamis filed the protest and a decision will be made on Tuesday on whether or not to continue the game.

The Explorers scored all five of their runs in the second inning against the recently named Teamline Direct Pitcher of the Month, Zach Peterson. With one out Tim Alberts walked and scored on Ernie Banks' RBI double. Derek Schemerhorn followed with a single, moving Banks to third and Schermerhorn took second on the throw home. After a walk to Javier Brown loaded the bases, Eric Williams singled home two making it 3-0. Darrick Hale added an RBI single and T.J. Bohn's sacrifice fly finished the scoring.

Explorers starter Mikael Ryder scattered five hits in the shutout while striking out two.

The same two teams meet Tuesday in game two of the three game series at 7:05 p.m. at Lewis and Clark Park. The Saints send LHP Ryan Morse (4-2, 4.92) to the mound against RHP Chad Povich (4-1, 5.04) to the mound. The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330. Please stay tuned for updated information should Monday night's game continue on Tuesday with an earlier start time.
