DURHAM, NC -- The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball announced today that El Paso Diablos INF Hector Bernal and St. Paul Saints RHP Zach Peterson (pictured) have been named the Teamline Direct Batter and Pitcher of the Month for July. The selection was made by Pointstreak, the official statistician of the American Association.

Bernal played in all 26 of El Paso's games in July. The leadoff man provided a tremendous spark for the rest of the lineup, as in addition to his .435 batting average, he reached base in more than half of his plate appearances (.508 on-base percentage). Bernal scored 25 runs and provided power as well, smashing 16 extra-base hits and knocking in 24 runs. Bernal impressively legged out five triples, moving him into first in the league in the category with seven. Additionally, he improved to fifth in the league in on-base percentage (.438), and moved into a fourth-place tie in batting average (.359). The 24-year-old was a 14th-round selection of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2006 MLB Amateur Draft.

Peterson made five starts in July and was rewarded for his excellent pitching with five wins. He posted a 1.93 ERA over the course of the month and struck out 23 in 32.2 innings of work. He allowed less than a hit per inning (28) and issued only eight walks. Opponents batted .224 off of the 25-year-old in July. Peterson is now second in the league in ERA, sporting a 2.58 mark. The righty was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Royals in 2007 and spent three years in the organization before joining St. Paul for the 2010 season.
