Captains Edge Wingnuts in Series Opener

SHREVEPORT, LA- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 4-2 to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains at Fairgrounds Field on Monday night.

The Captains scored three runs before recording their first out in the bottom of the first inning against Luke Massetti and managed to hold the lead through the end of the night.

Jovanny Rosario led off the bottom of the first with a double to left-center and moved to third on a bunt single by Bryan Sabatella. Christopher Garcia doubled down the left field line to score Rosario with the game's first run. Palmer Karr Jr. followed with a two-run double off the left field fence that opened a 3-0 Captains lead.

Massetti settled in after the first, retiring seven straight hitters following Karr's double. After a lead off single in the fourth by Brian Peterson, Massetti retired nine in a row. Massetti struck out eight and walked none in seven-plus innings while taking the loss. Massetti was charged with four earned runs.

Cesar Suarez homered over the left field fence off of Captains' starter Cardoza Tucker leading off the fifth. The Wingnuts went on to put the tying runs on base with two outs before Garcia robbed Jorge Cortes of a game-tying double, stabbing his hard, one-hop groundball inside the first base line.

Steve Pearson hit a two-out RBI double to center field in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Captains scored an insurance run in the eighth on a groundball single up the middle from Karr.

Hector Carrasco earned the save with a scoreless ninth, getting Jorge Delgado to hit into a game-ending double play. Tucker picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, in seven innings. Ryan Patterson extended his hitting streak to 11 games in a row, while Jorge Cortes' hitting streak ended at 10. Cortes also had an on-base streak end at 26 games.

Game two of the series is set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Newly signed right-hander Bubba O'Donnell takes on left-hander Ryan DiPietro.
