St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (August 22, 2012) - Now the real fun begins. The St. Paul Saints won for the sixth consecutive time on Wednesday night 9-2 over the Rockland Boulders in front of 5,004 at Midway Stadium and remained 1.5 games behind the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the Wild Card who will come to Midway Stadium for a huge four game series beginning Friday. The Saints are off Thursday while the Goldeyes finish their series in Gary meaning the Saints will either be 1.0 or 2.0 games back when the series begins on Friday.

Three things happened to the Saints on Wednesday that hadn't happened during the winning streak. First, the opposition scored first. Second, they trailed for the first time during the streak. Third, they gave up more than one run. None of it seemed to matter, however, as the Saints pounded out 16 hits, a career tying high four by Ronnie Bourquin, who finished a triple shy of the cycle and three by Miles Durham, who homered twice.

With the Saints trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the second Bourquin and Durham combined for the first couple of runs. With two outs Bourquin doubled and Durham followed with a two-run homer, his fifth of the season.

With the Saints leading 3-2 in the fourth Bourquin led off the inning with a solo homer to left, his ninth of the season, to give the Saints a 4-2 lead. Miles Durham reached on an infield single to third, Joe Spiers singled him to second and Alex Garabedian's single drove home Durham to make it 5-2. With one out Adam Frost made it 6-2 with a single.

In the fifth the Saints put the game away as Bourquin singled to left-center and Durham hit his second homer of the night and sixth of the season, to give the Saints an 8-2 lead. A sac fly by Adam Frost later in the inning was the final run of the game. Eight of the nine starters collected a hit with Jim Rapoport, Frost and Spiers also adding multi-hit nights with two each.

The Saints pitching staff was once again solid as starter Anthony Claggett went 5.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out four. Billy Spottiswood tossed 2.0 scoreless innings and has now thrown 16.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Chris Odegaard and Dustin Klabunde each added 1.0 scoreless inning of relief. The bullpen has allowed just one run in the last 14.1 innings pitched.

The Saints are off on Thursday and begin a four game series against the Goldeyes on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. It's the 1,993rd anniversary of the destruction of Pompeii, it's Mount Vesuvius Awareness Day. Plus it's Xcel Energy Friday Night Fireworks and Big Money Day Presented by St. Croix Casino. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
