Diablos Comeback on Wingnuts

Wichita Wingnuts News Release


WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (51-38) lost 14-9 to the El Paso Diablos (44-43) at Cohen Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Wichita had an 8-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth before the Diablos scored 11 unanswered runs over the fourth through eighth innings. In the fourth, Jermy Acey drew a leadoff walk, took third on a double to left-center from Zane Chavez and scored on Daniel Nelson's sacrifice fly to right. Chavez took third on Nelson's sac fly and scored on an RBI groundout from J.J. Muse to cut the Wingnuts' lead to 8-5.

Reid Fronk made it 8-6 with a two-out, RBI single to center in the bottom of the sixth. A wild pitch later in the inning scored Maikol Gonazalez with the tying run.

With a runner on second and one out in the seventh, Fernando Valenzuela Jr. lined a single to right to tie the game at 8-8.

El Paso scored six times in the bottom of the eighth to take their first and only lead of the game. Nelson drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a bunt single from Muse. Gonzalez pulled back a bunt attempt and grounded a single through the middle to drive in the go-ahead run. Fronk, Valenzuela, and Chavez added RBI singles in the inning. A Mitch Einertson sacrifice fly and an Acey RBI groundout accounted for the other two runs.

Jared McDonald drove in the Wingnuts' final run in the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly to left field.

In the top of the first, Jake Kahaulelio doubled to left field with one out and scored the game's first run on a line drive single to right from John Rodriguez. Rodriguez took second on an error by Welington Dotel and scored on Greg Porter's two-out single to right.

El Paso used an error and a Dotel sacrifice fly to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Wichita re-gained the lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Kahaulelio and extended it to 4-2 in the third on a two-out, RBI single from David Peralta.

Dotel singled home El Paso's third run in the bottom of the third before the Wingnuts scored four times in the top of the fourth. With first and third and no outs, Rodriguez singled home Ryan Khoury with a line drive to right. After C.J. Ziegler walked to load the bases, Porter ripped a single down the right field line to score two more runs. Wilson Batista hit a sacrifice fly to right that made it 8-3 in favor of Wichita.

Jared Simon took the loss in relief for the Wingnuts. Justin Harper earned the win for El Paso.

Anthony Capra started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision, allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in five and two-thirds innings. Capra walked four and struck out one.

Scott Hodsdon took a no-decision for the Diablos, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 15 hits in seven-plus innings. Hodsdon walked two and struck out one.

All nine of Wichita's starters had at least one hit. Kahaulelio, Rodriguez, Porter, and Peralta each had three-hit games.
