Diablos Drop Slugfest To Wichita To Snap Three Game Win Streak

August 22, 2012 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release

EL PASO, TX- The Diablos pounded out 17 hits but also surrendered the same amount to the visiting Wichita Wingnuts and fell in the series opener at Cohen Stadium by a final of 16-11.

Diablos starter Ramon Garcia lasted only three innings and gave up eight runs, letting an early El Paso lead slip away. The Diablos plated four runs in the bottom of the first, two coming on an inside-the-park home run by Jermy Acey.

But Wichita answered the Diablos with four runs in both the second and third, taking an 8-7 lead. That would be as close as El Paso would get the rest of the game, as reliever after reliever could not stymie the Wingnuts attack.

The Diablos did make one attempt at a comeback, scoring four times in the bottom of the eighth to turn a 13-7 deficit into a 13-11 game. The inning ended, however, when Zane Chavez's bases loaded drive to right was caught by David Peralta, who fired to first to double off Acey and escape the jam.

The Wingnuts added three runs in the top of the ninth to solve away the team's 51st win. Josh Lowey (14-4) rebounded from a loss to the Diablos a week ago to record his 14th victory, tying an American Association record.

The Diablos will play game two of the series Wednesday morning at Cohen Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. (MST).
