Sadzeck Stifles Canadians as Spokane Soars Past Vancouver 8-3
June 17, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA -Spokane starter Connor Sadzeck was making his professional baseball debut in today's game-just don't tell that to the baffled Vancouver Canadians. The towering right-hander from Crystal Lake, Illinois overpowered Vancouver's lineup with a mid-90's fastball as the Indians defeated the Canadians 7-3 in front of 4,803 fans at Avista Stadium for the Father's Day Game & Prostate Cancer Awareness presented by Reliable Parts, The Big 99.9 Coyote Country, and KXLY Newsradio 920.
Sadzeck was drafted in the 11th round of last year's MLB First-Year Player Draft, but didn't pitch in 2011 after signing late. He didn't show any signs of rust against the Canadians high-octane offense, striking out four in four innings while allowing just one run and one hit.
David Perez (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Sadzeck, and Josh McElwee and Alec Asher combined to strike out five batters in the game's final two frames.
In stark contrast to the season's first two games, Spokane's offense got on the board early and often on their way to a seven run, eleven hit afternoon. The Indians scored in the game's first four innings, with key doubles from Preston Beck and Ryan Rua, as well as a home run from shortstop Gabriel Roa over the Supercuts sign in leftfield.
Rua finished the game 3-5 with two RBI and fan favorite Hirotoshi Onaka drew four walks and scored three runs in his season debut.
The Indians auctioned off light-blue hats worn by their players during the game to support Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure, which works to increase awareness of prostate cancer treatment, prevention & detection.
With the victory, Tim Hulett reached 200 career wins as Spokane Indians manager.
