Sellout Crowd on Hand as Indians Rally Falls Short

Spokane Indians News Release

Spokane, WA -For the second consecutive night, Spokane fell behind early and couldn't muster a late rally as Vancouver defeated the Indians 11-4 in front of 6,864 fans at Avista Stadium for a Yoke's $1 Family Feast Night presented by Yoke's Fresh Market & 92.9 ZZU.

Spokane starter Jose Valdespina (0-1) failed to record an out in his stateside debut, walking four batters and leaving the Indians in an early 4-0 hole. Right-hander Shawn Blackwell relieved Valdespina and held the Canadians to two runs over four innings, opening the door for a Spokane comeback attempt.

Joe Maloney, Barrett Serrato, and Gabriel Roa reached base in the top of the seventh to load the bases with no outs, and centerfielder Christopher Garia cleared the bags with a screaming triple to the left-center alley. Nick Urbanus followed with an RBI groundout, cutting Vancouver's lead to 6-4.

The comeback would be short-lived though, as the Indians defense faltered in the bottom of the eighth, allowing four unearned runs on errors from Preston Beck and Serrato.

Former Gonzaga outfielder Royce Bolinger picked up his first career hit with a line drive single to left in the bottom of the sixth inning.
