Cuban Carreras Carries Bears to Victory
June 17, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release
The Yakima Bears won for the first time this season, beating the Eugene Emeralds 7-2 Sunday afternoon at PK Park in Eugene, Oregon. Bears starting pitcher Alexander Carreras and a steady defense led the team to the win.
Carreras worked in and out of trouble throughout the day. The lefty spread out eight hits and two walks to allow just one run in six innings of work. The only run given up by Carreras was on a solo home run in the fourth, as he stranded five runners in scoring position.
The strong performances on the mound for the Bears continued after Carreras left the game. Victor Acosta allowed only one run in two and a third innings and Victor Capellan got the final two outs to seal the victory.
Bears outfielder Shaun Cooper got the offense going with a solo home run to tie the game as the lead-off man in the sixth inning. The Bears scored five more runs that inning without another hit, thanks to four errors, two walks, two hit batsmen, and two wild pitches. Both teams added a run in the seventh, with Danny Poma reaching on a double and scoring on an error for the Bears run.
Poma's hit was his first as a professional. Josh Parr was the only Bears player with a multi-hit game, as he went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a stolen base as the lead-off man.
In the end, the Emeralds committed six errors, including three by third baseman Chris Burke. The Bears defense, on the other hand, turned three double plays and picked off a baserunner.
The Bears are now 1-2 on the season, with still two more games to play in Eugene. Monday the start time is set for 7:05. Both teams are slated to start a lefty, with Cody Wheeler going for the Bears and Mike Watt expected for the Emeralds.
