Lancaster Stormers News Release
Ryan Harvey is a feast or famine type hitter. On Friday night, he feasted. The dish was a 3-2 fastball with the bases loaded in the first inning.
Harvey's grand slam off left-hander Wade Korpi (2-4) was the biggest blow as the Barnstormers beat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in the second game of a four- game home series.
Lancaster's night began with Jerry Owens and Jason Taylor drilling singles and Blake Gailen picking up a walk to set Harvey up for a bases loaded, no-out, at bat. Wade Korpi (2-4) worked ahead in the count, but "Thor" was able to fight back to 3-2. Harvey wasted no time hitting the fastball over the left-center field fence for his 18th long ball on the season. The Lancaster right fielder added a double in the seventh inning and scored an insurance run.
Southern Maryland jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after capitalizing off of two Barnstormer errors. Jason Taylor misplayed a ground ball allowing Renny Osuna to reach first base with one out. Two batters later Olmo Rosario could not handle a grounder from Brian Barton. With runners on first and third Jose Salas delivered with a two out single plating Osuna. The Blue Crabs attempted a double steal, but Salas started late and was pinned in a rundown for the final out.
Rich Rundles (2-0) worked admirably despite having three errors committed behind him. He threw six innings and did not allow an earned run.
He did have to stare down two more threats. Southern Maryland loaded the bases with nobody out in the third on a walk, an error and a bunt single. Rundles retired Jose Julio-Ruiz on a foul pop up and struck out Brian Barton for two quick outs. Salas walked to force home one run before Alvin Colina grounded into a force out at third to end the inning.
The fourth presented another bases loaded opportunity for the Blue Crabs. With one out and the sacks full, Osuna yanked a line drive headed toward the alley in left center. Jerry Owens streaked across the outfield and made a diving catch. Meanwhile, chaos unfolded on the basepaths. Sean Smith passed Jeremy Owens around second. At the same time, Nicolas appeared to have left third base too soon. The Barnstormers got the out on Smith's gaffe to end the inning.
Olmo Rosario and Daryle Ward each added solo homers in the 4th and 5th innings respectively to help the Barnstormers pull away.
Owens, Harvey, Travis Denker, and Kyle Haines all recorded two-hit nights for Lancaster.
Lancaster will entertain Southern Maryland again on Saturday at 7:00 with a laser show following the game. Will Savage (6-9) will get the start for the Barnstormers. The Blue Crabs have not committed to a starter. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
