Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves, behind a strong starting pitching performance from Kyle Ryan, took down the Akron RubberDucks 2-1 on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park.
Erie struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning against Akron starter Will Roberts. Jason Krizan singled with one out and moved into scoring position on a Eugenio Suarez knock. The runners advanced to second and third on a deep flyout from Aaron Westlake. Krizan scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 SeaWolves.
Erie added to the lead in the last of the fifth. Jamie Johnson singled with two outs and was doubled over to third by Marcus Lemon. Krizan singled home Johnson making it 2-0.
Akron got on the board in the top of the eighth against Erie reliever Guido Knudson. Ronny Rodriguez led off with a walk and moved to third on an Alex Lavisky base hit. With one out, Tyler Naquin singled home Rodriguez making it 2-1. Erie went to the bullpen and brought in Jose Valdez who retired the final two batters of the eighth to preserve the lead.
Valdez worked a perfect ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts, earning his fourth save and slamming the door on a 2-1 victory. It was the first 1-2-3 inning for Valdez since April 24.
Ryan (3-5) was brilliant as he snapped a three-game losing skid. The lefty tossed 6.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
