Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Binghamton Mets went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded the potential game-tying run at third base in a 2-1 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. The B-Mets left four on base over the final three innings in their second straight loss.
Binghamton jumped on the board in the second against Portland starter Brian Johnson. Jayce Boyd started the frame by shooting a single to the right-field gap and Cory Vaughn followed by ripping a double off the top of the "Maine Monster". With two aboard, Dustin Lawley lifted a sac fly to deep center, plating Boyd with the game's first run.
B-Mets starter Darin Gorski opened his eighth start of the season with three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Blake Swihart erased Binghamton's one-run lead by blasting a solo home-run off the videoboard in left-center field.
Gorski was burned by a shaky defensive stretch later in the frame. With a runner on first, shortstop Matt Reynolds had a bouncing ball squeak under his glove for an error. With runners at the corners, Gorski tossed a pickoff attempt to first, prompting the runner on third, Henry Ramos, to make a run for home. Matt Clark read the play quickly, but his throw to the plate skipped past Kevin Plawecki, giving the Sea Dogs a 2-1 lead.
Johnson comfortably shut down the B-Mets offense after letting the visitors get on the board in the second. The lefty capped his start with four scoreless innings, retiring 13 of the final 15 batters he faced. He surrendered just one single and issued one walk in his final four innings of work.
Portland Reliever Matty Ott worked around a leadoff single in a scoreless seventh before running into a jam in the eight. He walked Travis Taijeron to start the inning. After a single and a fly out put runners at the corners, Reynolds ripped a grounder to third. Taijeron broke for the plate on contact and was gunned down by Stefan Welch. Kevin Plawecki flied out to end the threat.
Binghamton received one last chance in the ninth when Derrik Gibson dropped Clark's fly ball to left-center for a two-base error to start the inning. Clark moved to third on a ground out, but was left 90 feet from the plate as Noe Ramirez notched the final two outs to earn his fourth save.
Johnson (3-0) struck out six while allowing one run over six innings to collect his second win against the B-Mets. Gorski (3-2) gave up two runs (one earned) and fanned six over five innings of work in the loss.
The B-Mets (24-18) continue their six-game series against the Sea Dogs with a doubleheader starting at 5:00 PM on Wednesday. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show, starting at 4:45 PM, can be heard on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and on the Binghamton Mets Baseball Network via the TuneIn App.
POST-GAME NOTES: The B-Mets have lost back-to-back games for the first time since they dropped four straight from May 3 to May 6..both teams combined to go 0-for-19 with runners in scoring position...it was Darin Gorski's first loss since Opening Night (April 3 v Akron)
