Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, CO - Rapid City utilized three 5-on-3 powerplay goals to defeat the Colorado Eagles 4-1 Wednesday at the Budweiser Events Center. Rapid City goaltender Danny Battochio grabbed 24 saves in the win, while Eagles netminder Kris Lazaruk took the loss in his first start since suffering an injury on November 28th.
The Eagles got off to an early start, scoring 3:13 into the game as defenseman Colin Joe took the puck off the face-off and fired a slapshot into the net from the point, giving Colorado a 1-0 lead. The Eagles held the 1-0 advantage as the two teams headed into the first intermission.
Rapid City found a scoring touch in the second period tying the game with 14:15 to play in the frame when defenseman Benjamin Dieude-Favel found an opportunity on a 5-on-3 power play and placed a one-timer from the point into the net, knotting the game at 1-1.
After an altercation that saw three separate fights, the Rush earned an extended 5-on-3 powerplay and notched two goals in close succession. Forward Winston Day Chief scored his tenth goal of the season for Rapid City at the 10:55 mark off a deflection in the low-slot to give the Rush their first lead of the game at 2-1. Just 1:37 later, defenseman James Melindy gave his team a 3-1 lead, scoring off a shot from the point to make it 3-1 Rapid City. The Rush would hold that 3-1 lead after the initial forty minutes of play had come to a conclusion.
The Rush added another goal early in the third period, as forward Cody Ferriero scored on a partial breakaway to give Rapid City a 4-1 advantage at the 3:06 mark of the final frame. Colorado would not be able to find an answer, as the Eagles fell by a final of 4-1.
Colorado finished the night 0-for-5 on the powerplay, while the Rush went 3-for-10 on the man-advantage.
The Eagles hit the road Friday to take on the Rush again, this time in Rapid City. Puck drop is at 7:05 MST.
