RubberDucks Stop Binghamton, 3-2

Akron's Connor Marabell stroked a two-run double, and Matt Whitehouse tossed four shutout innings in a spot-start, as the RubberDucks defeated the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, 3-2, Thursday night at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.

Turning Point

The RubberDucks (52-38) scored three times on four hits in the first inning against Mickey Jannis (6-3). Mark Mathias and Bobby Bradley singled ahead of Marabell's two-run double. Willie Castro followed with a single to drive in Marabell to give Akron a 3-0 lead.

Mound Presence

Whitehouse twirled four shutout innings, tossing 36 strikes among his 48 total pitches. Although he didn't qualify for the win, he threw 36 of his 48 total pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 1.53. David Speer tossed a scoreless fifth, and right-hander Cole Sulser (1-0) fired two shutout innings to pick up the relief win in his first game with the Ducks.

Duck Tales

After the first, Akron managed just two more hits off Jannis and right-hander Matt Blackham. The Rumble Ponies (43-45) avoided the shutout when they notched a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Joey Terdoslovich off Nick Pasquale. Akron closer Henry Martinez gave up a lead-off triple by John Mora in the ninth but retired the next three hitters to close out a 3-2 win and secure his 10 save in 10 tries.

Notebook

Marabell now has a team-high 53 RBI...The Ponies had runners at second and third with one out in the third, but ran themselves into a double play when Kevin Taylor grounded to short and Levi Michael ended up caught in a rundown between third and home...The RubberDucks improved to 6-1 against Binghamton...The Ponies' Tim Tebow was 1-4...Time of game: 2:20 ... Attendance: 5,076.
